Is it just me who thinks that crushing a perfectly serviceable car over 10 years old to get 3 grand towards a new one for environmental reasons is a hoodwink?

1/. To build a new car makes as much pollution as driving that car for ten years does at average kilometres.

2/ pollution is measured as a percentage of what comes out of the exhaust not by how much nasties come out in total IE a 50cc 2 stroke motorbike would come out dirty as hell compared to say a brand new Hummer H1 if measured by percent of total gasses coming out BUT total nasties spewing out per kilometre travelled the Hummer would be dirtiest because of how much more fuel and air is going in (cubic feet of exhaust gas coming out) yes that pollution is more diluted but there is probably more of it in total. This is purely an example based on roughly the smallest vehicle available vs roughly the largest.


3/ Crushing a complete car means you can't use it's parts to keep similar vehicle on the road. This means that the surviving vehicles have to have new (and often imported)parts fitted because used ones are not available. This is directly against the "reduce reuse recycle" mantra.

If at first you don't succeed then skydiving is not for you.

how about instead of paying $3000 to crush old cars, they give the owners $3000 to repair them, then they would be in good condition

the money could be used for things like reconditioning the engine, fitting a catalitic convertor or upgrading brakes, t

I've seen the same thing at Bendigo swap each year. One particular van I've seen there each year for the past 10+ years, that has so much rust, it's held together with chicken wire & bog, that flexes when the rear & side doors are opened....

No RWC nessesary in South Australia, Speed limit's 110 KMH and BAC was until recently, .08 (now .05 i think) and their road toll is lower than most.
Northern Territory had unlimited speed limits till not long ago and iirc, they are now set at 140 KMH.
