Hi HK1837.
I knew the owner of the HK 307 monaro and as you say it had a 350 crank as well as being bored to 4". He built another engine and replaced the saginaw so I got the motor, box, and driveshaft. It was 1977 and I know that plenty of people were making monaros do more than GMH intended. The bloke I got the monaro from worked for P & R Performance on Parramatta Rd at Granville before they moved to Parramatta Rd at Auburn. There were some very fast monaros back in the 70's.
I was also building a T Bucket with HQ sedan rear suspension along with hillman imp coil shocks and the above mentioned motor and box. The monaro came up for $900 however it was reduced to $800 (he gave me $100 cash back) as he ended up keeping the original diff. I picked it up on a Sunday arvo and had the monaro up and running by Friday night.
I was living between Auckland and Auburn at the time and when the engine Hydraulic'd it was just as I was about to go back to NZ again. I was born in Sydney and grew up in the western suburbs and remember riding my bike out to Castlereagh from Auburn as a kid and home again.
In hindsight we all know that we should have kept a lot of what we owned in the past....... But families come and they grow up and move away. And some marriages break down and we sometimes lose a lot of money! I have lost count of the number of cars I have owned, destroyed, wrecked for parts or rebuilt mechanicals and resold. I am not a body man and don't know where to start with rust and panel damage but I know my way around red and grey motor powered Holdens well enough to keep them running well and driving like they should.
I am limited by my income as to restoring my HG Van quickly. Rust repairs are required and the subframes have to come off. It would be easier to replace the sub frames with a better set. Then the firewall will require rust repairs too. It isn't as bad as some old Holdens I have seen before and after pics of!!!!! It is driveable but not pretty.
But I have it and it isn't going anywhere!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It may be worth grabbing a HG sedan or wagon from out west as a donor for subframe etc. They aren't as cheap as they used to be, but you'll buy a decent car with minimal rust for $2000-$3000-ish. It will provide you with floor sections, sill panels etc too. This is how we fixed the yellow 5litre HK GTS, and I have another complete rust free HK sedan and another two HK Monaros to do the repairs on my yellow GTS327.
I'm hearing you on the selling cars you could have kept! |

I arranged a replacement crank and rods along with pistons, rings and bearings and it was resprayed after being rebuilt. It did 14.34 at Castlereagh with a single spinner 2.78 10 bolt under the back end after the rebuild. Keep the stories coming fella's? Ron I would think that FX just looks like that because it's close to the sea, and was driven in from the other side of the house using a crane if I remember correctly, some story was in the paper about it years ago. I think it was his grand dads car and he did not want anyone messing with it. leave it alone it's mine he would say, so they tell me. There are plenty FX Holdens around the place that I know of and they are not worth doing up because they have so little value.

My mate grabbed about a dozen 48/215 and utes and FJ's when he first moved up near Tamworth along with dozens of other FE-HR. Pulled all the panels and good bits off them and scrapped the rest. He still has some panels as most cars were rust free other than the floors. One FJ ute had a tree growing through it, but once the tree was removed the engine actually ran after probably 20 years. |

I'll keep my eyes open out west as I deliver poly pipe around outback qld. I came across an EK ute as a garden ornament about a year ago. It wasn't too bad but it wasn't going anywhere.... A lot of old cars have been cleaned up by the scrap dealers.

I picked up a 161 Motor last week on a farm. It had been lying on the back of a damaged land cruiser ute for a long time without a filler cap on the tappet cover. The engine number is 161H442957 which is HG. I topped up the engine oil, filled the carby with fuel and away it went. Noisy straight out the exhaust manifold. Seems to be a good runner though. And it came with an EH sump!
I have a 161R (HR?) engine which is surplus to requirements.
I haven't had any luck with finding my original engine (161H322145) nor have I found any other pics or footage of the HG Production Line in Adelaide. Apart from the clips supplied by GM5735 which were much appreciated. The 1966 clip is of the HD engine assembly as it shows a 149. There must be more footage around somewhere?
