The random nature of numbering goes back to the very start of Holden production from around early September 1948....

... You have body 19 today, which was one of only 20 body assemblies produced in that month followed by its chassis serial 8-1157-M ...which was way beyond the 100 "announcement" dealer cars that were all October bodies and issued out by no later than the middle/late November , with this one being registered very late in December 1948.

...Then at the same time having the engine prefix of 1126...produced no later than late October that year....Go figure on Holden numbering, as it is a totally imprecise science. ??

Even VN Commodores were like this - some very early builds had engine numbers much higher than those from a month later. One of the lowest numbers I recorded (within the first 100) was from a late August '88 car - and these were all built at one plant, so by rights it was around the 10,000th or more VN produced based on the sales rates and production kicking off in July '88.

I like the "shed" suggestion from Dr Terry, and I believe a similar scenario probably bore out with VN as well - they kicked off V6 production, stockpiling them, and took some time to work their way through the initial stockpile.
Cheers,

Mick

They didn't store huge amounts of stuff at the assembly plants, but the shuffling and mixing up of them at Fisherman's bend is probably more the culprit. I often see a 10,000 number variation between adjacent PSN's in HQ-HZ. Here is a pair I picked at random out of my database:

8M70LGL371972X QL812318
8M70LGL371973X QL831402

The first one was completed on 28/1/77 and the next on 3/2/77. The next PSN engine number is QL811815 and it was completed 28/1/77.

It was common for engine number series to get out of succession. In a lot of cases when engines were found to have a fault (sometimes a week or two after production) a team would be sent interstate from Melb to do reworks onsite at Elizabeth. It was common in some cases for racks of engines to be returned to Melb to carry out reworks and could sit around for up to 2-3 weeks before being sent out again so engine sequence would mean nothing to assembly plants. Or one of the cars could have been delayed on the assembly line or the engine fail on the rollers as the car leaves the assembly line, meaning another engine is fitted. Or even in some odd cases the dealer swaps engines between cars before the paperwork goes back to GMH detailing the engine number in the car. Normally it is just due to the random nature of the way it happened as Dr Terry states.

Yes mine was a manual box XX7 P van and as the HX uses the chev turbo rear bolt pattern for the T 400 auto in the 5.0L blocks and the Aussie type bolt pattern for the manual 5.0L
It was a Nov 1976 build date and a 10/2/1977 acquisition date.

Yes, very different engines as they leave the engine plant even if they had the same bellhousing bolt pattern (as in LX Torana).
