Hi , i was wondering if someone could give me some information on a HQ ute that i just brought. Big tag-HQ80480 XX7,3173--B,1877-39E,568-15827.Thin tag-8N80RDH3173--Q. Compliance plate-5/74 EHQ6280-- GVW 4850 , seating 2.The vin and body tag serial numbers match.How rare are HQ sandman utes? How many were made and in this colour?The ute is in a poor state at the moment and just wondering about its future, Thanks Garry.

The ID plates were originally on a Sandman but I cannot tell you if they belong together without seeing the PSN and the chassis number - it is a new car to me as I do not have an Acacia Ridge HQ XX7 ute recorded with a PSN of H3173xx. It should be 5/74 or if not late 4/74.
HQ Sandmans were not made in huge numbers and the numbers surviving today reflect this, utes even moreso. 1877 Barbados green is relatively common, of the 107 confirmed (or most likely to be) HQ Sandmans I have recorded I have 11 in 1877, all V8 (6 x L32 and 5 x L31). |

Byron do you have more surviving utes or vans on your register I would have thought their would be more utes around unless their were significantly less utes manufactured than vans back in 74, just seems their was time went vans fell out popularity wise compared to utes and would have thought less vans survived this period becoming donors etc for other cars

Less utes. Most are gone today, wrecked for bits especially HQ-HJ. |

Most Utes got worn out. Vans generally had an easier life. Vans ran out of popularity but Utes were already gone.

The sandman came with a 186 engine obviously not original so i have a 253 date code 23K3, will this be close enough to the build date of a 5/74 sandman

Don't bother chasing date codes on engines, it is a fool's errand with run of the mill engines like a 253. If it is not the original engine then any will do. You might as well put a 308 in it as the wrong 253. |
