Gday Folks,

Can anyone help with info (to buy or pics to convert) the very rare fuel sendor units in the 25 gallon large Bathurst type fuel tanks?

I am currently restoring a HKGTS 327 & have had the orignal 25 gallon tanks baffles restored, during the process the sendor unit from the tank has been missplaced?

I can buy a standard 16.5 gallon fuel sendor unit from rare spares & others but not the larger 25 gallon unit! (No one has them)!!!!

From what it looks like the 16.5 gallon tank & the 25 gallon tank share the same lower half & therefore the sendor unit pick up could be similar, the larger tank has a taller top half so the sendor unit could need to be taller (longer inside the top tank) as well?

Anyone no the dimensions or had experience in converting a 16.5 sendor to the taller 25 unit?

Any info or pics would be very much appreciated.....

If anyone has a 25 gallon sender unit then a picture with length of the arm showing would be helpful. That or a faulty one itself is enough for Rare Spares to get the factory to reproduce it. This item is on the to do list as the tank factory is now considering producing the tank itself. They already have a sample and hopefully will do the HK.HT.HG ones as the difference is mainly in the vent pipe section. Any assistance will be rewarded with a NEW one once they are made and tested.

Here's a pic of a sender that I pulled out of my HK 327 tank. The dimensions on the tape measures might be helpful.

Incidentally, I bought a new sender for $25 plus $5 tax, but that was on 19th February, 1986. There was nothing wrong with the old sender, but decided to replace it with the new one anyway. Brought back some memories when I dragged this one out of the cupboard to take the pic.

Ah the good old 80s - the things we come across hey!

Would you beleave i junked a hk 81837 to build a hot Brougham & dumped the body at a Melbourne tip complete with tags - If only we knew then what we no now????

We all wrecked good cars to build utes, vans, tonners etc. HK GTS's were parts mines until the mid 90's, no-one wanted them.

Thanks to the assistance of GM5735 we have been able to finally produce , test and approve the 25 gallon fuel sender unit.These are now on order with the factory and we expect supply to be available early 2016. they passed all the tests for fitment and readings. They have the support arm welded to the pipe to strengthen against any fuel movement in the tank. made from Stainless steel to resist corrosion.

Tour Director has there been any progress on the 25 gallon sender? i'm still using a bent 16.5 which is ok unless you need actual fuel tank level for the gauge.

got my new sender today, good to see taiwan and not china. haven't fitted it yet, looks good except for there's no support on the top for when you connect/disconnect the fuel hose which makes it different to the smaller tank . I've never had the correct unit for the 25 gallon tank so I don't know if it had the same soldered support as the standard one. there is a support on the inside on the new one so maybe that's the difference?

The factory declined to add it. The one inside is a small concession to functionality. I suggest you measure the maximum resistance before installing it. There have been issues.

tested resistance today and got .5 to 35.7 ohms. factory manual states 0/.5 to 29.6/31.3. which makes it a tad high at full. don't think this should be a problem as it might read full for a bit longer than it should, but as long as it tells me when I need to fill up i'll be happy as I doubt i'll ever be able to afford to fill it anyway.
I take it that the 16.5 and the 25 gallon senders would have the same maximum resistance for full or there would be a separate fuel gauge for the 25 gallon tank.

It's actually more accurate than the original sender. The resistance doesn't vary linearly with tank contents depth. At 31 ohms the original fuel gauge doesnt quite read full.
Yes, same resistance range for the 16.5 gallon tank sender, since it's the same gauge regardless of tank size.
More than a few were shipped with 100 Ohm elements in them, which is why I suggested you measure it first.

The factory owner visited Rare Spares very early this year and all sender units should be correct. As KBM noted it may take a little while with a full tank for the gauge to start coming down as fuel is used, but the important issue is to know when it is getting low. One of the hardest thing was getting an actual tank to send and use in Taiwan, luckily Phil Bartolo was able to assist with GM5735 doing a lot of testing,perseverance and valuable advice. This is one product that was made at a large cost with low sales volume return potential, but essential to complete the product range.

THANKS GUYS, I was nearly caught out using the bent 16.5 sender on my way to town one day. as I approached town I got the splutter on the up hill and ok going down hill and thankfully she cut out on the last downhill so I coasted into town and made it to the servo without having to push. the quietest entrance the old bro has ever made and I swore if they ever make one it's first on the list.
