Hi All
The Royal Australian Mint is trying to arrange a media event to coincide with the release of the two latest car related coin packs; High Octane Motorsports legends. Two of the seven Holden coins are Monaros, the HK and HT. They have the HT desc a little wrong as it refers to the first all Australian Monaro. I think we acknowledge that goes to the HT 253 but...

In preparation for the event, I wonder if the collective knowledge here can compile a few facts for use during the show:
For example:
How many KTG Monaros were made?
What is the split of numbers across each model?
How many were V8's?
How many were the GTS sporty version for each model?
What are some of the more unusual accessories the cars could be optioned with?
How many ATCC races did the Monaro win?
Who are the better know Monaro racing car drivers ('back in the day')and why?

Any other cool facts people might like to know about the Monaro?

One last thing I just noticed, Norm Beechey's No 4 HT Monaro is the one used on the coin. I notice it has the stripes off centre on the drivers side. Why was that given the HT's had the stripes down the centre?

Cheers
Jacko

The first “all Australian” Monaro is a HK Monaro with 6cyl and either 3spd manual boxes. The HT Monaro that could claim to be the first “all Australian V8 Monaro” would be a Standard HT V8 Monaro, ie 253, 3spd manual. No GTS other than a HG V8 auto (253 Trimatic) could claim to be all Australian as they all had at least an imported engine, gearbox or rear axle centre. Although we all know there are some minor imported parts on even a HK Monaro, and the styling expertise used on the HK-HG Monaros was heavily imported, but mostly done here.

The rest I can’t help with right now. Maybe later if others don’t give you what you are after.

The Monaro only contested the ATCC in 1968, 1969 & 1970, where Norm Beechey won 6 races overall as well as the championship itself in 1969. These were won in an HK & an HT & were both numbered 4. The HK was painted Blue with its stripe in the standard HK position, but his HT was painted Shell Yellow & he painted his own (red) stripe on the RHS of the bonnet, boot & roof ! It was larger than the HK stripe & in a different position yet again.

There were also 2 HQ GTS350s raced in 1974 but these weren't competitive in the outright sense.

In the ATCC the only competitive Monaro driver was Norm Beechey, but the Monaro was also raced in Series Production, where it won many races including Bathurst in 1968 & 1969.

In Series Production there were many famous Monaro drivers including Peter Brock, Colin Bond, Bruce McPhee, Des West, Tony Roberts, Nick Petrilli, Digby Cook, Bob Watson etc. etc. (I'm sure I left some out).

There was a Monaro GTS sedan raced in from memory the revamped Group C in 1973 and 1974 as both s 308 and 350. Ron Dickson.

A few more Terry (from my recollection so will have missed some more too):

Bill Brown, Paul Hawkins, Max Stahl, Paul Haynes.

The Dickson Monaro ran as a GTS 308 4-door in the 1973 Bathurst, but not the ATCC. He then raced it in both Bathurst & the ATCC in 1974 as a GTS 350 4-door. This was one of the 2 uncompetitive Monaros I was referring to.

thanks for the replies. The coin uses the Beechey No 4 car with the red stripe.
The 1969 HT coin is followed by a Torana XU-1 from 1972 and then another torana from 1979, then a VX commodore from 2001. Did these cars all win Bathurst?

HT Monaro won Bathurst in 69, but not Beechey's. Bathurst was production cars at that time, ATCC that Beechey won in Monaro were modified to an extent

Beechey raced HK in ATCC in 69 (3rd), won in the HT in 70, and raced without success in the HT in 71 and 72

Right, perhaps they car the Mint was really looking to put on the coin was the Colin Bond and Tony Roberts HT that won Bathurst in 1969. No 44 D, HDT car, white with a green hood.

Shouldnt forget Phil West if we are talking about drivers. He did most of the work in steering 24D to second place at Bathurst in 1968 and was involved in the development program testing at Lang Lang.

Hi All
Coin set arrived today. The folder containing the 1970 HT Monaro coin featuring Norm Beechey's yellow HT contains the following blurb:

"This Monaro was all Australian; its locally developed V8 engine propelling the distinctive red and yellow coupe to the 1970 championship becoming the first Holden, and indeed the first locally produced car to win the title."

What do we think of that description given it still used the chev 350 and not a 253? IMHO I think the Mint got a little confused or some dodgy advice.

That description could also relate to a 308.

There was a HT V8 GTS which was standard with a 253 and imported 4spd. But at various times was optional with 5litre (307) and Powerglide auto, 253 and Powerglide or 308 with 4spd or Powerglide.

Do you know definitively if their HK's were Monaro or GTS?

Unfortunately the only picture I can find is on this site and it says V8 GTS about halfway through the pdf (end of round 4):

http://www.snooksmotorsp...LLY-CHAMPIONSHIP-FIN.pdf

I assume these must be 6cyl GTS if they are GTS's as the results lists the Garards as driving Holden 186S? Or was that still their old HR's?

I think the HK V8 mentioned in the document is a V8 auto sedan.

Why I ask is there is now two known early Pagewood Picardy red 307 manual Monaros that have turned up. So I'm wondering if the cars they rallied were actually Monaros and not GTS's? It is hard to tell for sure by that B&W inage.

The 186S results are their HRs, they replaced these with two red HK Monaro coupes with 5 litre engine. The photo does show them as Monaro as there is no GTS badge on the bonnet. That car is EZT153, EZT154 is featured in Wheel April 1969, it is a colour photo showing the car as red and also NOT a GTS.

BTW EZK532 was first registered on the 20th of August 1968.

Cool, thanks Warren. I thought they might be Monaros, but I just didn’t trust an old B&W photo to be certain. I think this solves a mystery for me. I wonder how I’d go finding a chassis number for EZT-153 or 154? I’ll ask a friend in NSW Police if either show up with a chassis number as I think their records go back to the mid 80’s.
