The black outs on 70's cars like Monaro Torana Sandman etc were they are sharp etc ie: sprayed over the top of body colour with a edge you cold feel when you ran your hand over it, I have asked my TAFE teacher (doing a automative spray painting course) and he seems to think back in the day thats how they were , reason I ask I looked at a HQ 350 four door car last week it has been repainted 2 K and the blackouts are smooth with body colour I can't asked the owner who had it done as he passed away and was well know in the HQ Community , my Sandman has been painted 2K and I am in the process of putting it back together and just realised mine has the edge so wondering what they were from factory.

On the factory 1973-4 HQ GTS, the boot and bonnet step was at the very least "softened" by knocking (sanding) down the step, then clear coating the entire surface. this sanding may have been repeated and re-cleared to finally have the "step" barely noticeable. This was all OK for a few years until the sub-standard acrylic clearcoat used at the time finally crazed. Refinishing the whole external panel was the only answer, but it also had the good outcome of showing up an original, unpainted GTS.

Apparently because they were painted in acrylic this naturally made a softer edge than you would get with a modern 2 pack paint job.
Apparently pulling the tape sooner with 2 pac help recreate the factory edge......apparently
