Hi all.
Starting to think about the driveline on my car now the bodywork is nearing the end.
First off my car is a factory 308/powerglide/salisbury but I bought it with an incorrect HQ 10 bolt. I have since purchased the correct diff but unsure if the tailshaft will still fit. Quick rub back shows yellow paint so im guessing 308 to v8 banjo tailshaft. Does anyone have the correct lenght for my factory tailshaft so I can check this one and get it adjusted if needed.
Also I bought a replacement (period correct) radiator for my car with a center filler cap but the part number confirmed it's for a ht 253 auto.
Would this still cool a largely stock 308 alright and is its overall appearance the same as a 308(non heavy duty)radiator.

Yellow Holden V8 auto banjo shaft is 56.08" uni to uni. The 308 auto Salisbury Light Bronze Green shaft is 54.42".
The 253 auto with air and 308 auto radiators list as the same part number, 7438467 but as you say the regular duty 253 one is different. The 308 uses the same core as a 307 by the looks, and it is the same core for 253 and 308 at least up to HJ. So maybe go looking for a HQ or HJ 253 radiator for the core and use your tanks? I have found good cores pretty regularly over the years for them and have been using them up gradually. Last two I used were one out of a V8 Torana for a HK 307 and one out of a HQ 350 for another car. They are out there if you go looking, they turn up cheap on Gumtree or Ebay. Original cores last a lot longer than replacement ones. |

Cheers for that. Ran the tape measure over my shaft and it's about 56 so that makes sense. I'll get it cut down and balanced.
So the factory 308 auto reg duty tanks will be the same as my 253 tanks I just need to find 308 ht core or a hq up 253 core.
Any tips on how you decide it's a good core to buy ? Do you get the seller to check things or just based on photos ?

Had a quick look at NATRAD brochure. Seem to only have 2 types of cores available for the ht. A v8 or 6 core. Dimensions look good for my tanks so if I struggle to find a good second hand one I'll go this way.
Two more questions if anyone can help.
1. My diff has a broken preload plate.
Does anyone have the correct part number for a 68 10 volt pre load plate and where I can find one.
2. Guard badge location. My replacement guards are HG so no drilled holes. Every photo or discussion I see on it is a little different. Best I can tell is the GTS badge above the flutes is either in line with the bodyline/crease or up to 5mm above it. The flag/308 looks to be the same but below the line( from the top of the 308 5 mm) the low point of the flags looks about 10-15 mm aft of the bumper mount holes.???
Does anyone have the gospel on this or is it a bit hit and miss from the factory ???
I feel like sikaflexing them on to be safe.....

Hi Devo,
Phil Bartollo has the original guards off that Black 308 GTS HT Monaro in his possession at the moment. Maybe if you ask him to make up a drawing for you, i'm not sure if he will charge you. But it wouldn't be much cost.
Best to get a radiator pressure tested by any Mechanic, it's pretty easy to do. In the 253 core the fins are wider apart than the 308 standard cores, in the later holden models anyway.

Yes, the HJ cores with the same part number as HT 307/308 (7438983)(also the same as HT 253 heavy duty or HT 253 with A/C) are:
6cyl heavy duty auto or manual.
6cyl with A/C manual or auto (except auto cab chassis with A/C).
V8 manual heavy duty.
253 cab chassis except auto with A/C.
V8 auto heavy duty.
V8 auto with A/C.
That is plenty to choose from. HQ will be similar.
