I wonder if this is the beginning of the end for Holden?

It was only a matter of time before GM had to do this. Ford announced they were pulling out of unprofitable models (ie, sedans) many months ago.
The Canada plant is a bit of a surprise, but the others aren't - especially if they are producing cars that are a duplication of what other plants are making (cheaper) and sales volumes don't require the additional capacity of a 2nd or 3rd plant doing the same thing.

However, this article https://www.goauto.com.a...ks/2018-11-27/76627.html claims Holden jobs are safe, and I find GoAuto to be one of the most accurate website about cars.
Far more on the money than many of the "mainstream" web bullshites about cars that seem to pick up their rumours from 12 year old schoolboys....

Cheers,

Mick

Yeah I have never been able to see why GM would need to keep a brand that doesn’t actually make a product going. They will just give it all time to calm down and then they will axe Holden.

I think that may eventually happen. In the end people will buy Chevrolet or Cadillac if the cars are what people want. People won't buy a Holden anymore because of the name, the car has to be what people want to buy. You won't get any more dyed in the wool Holden people than you find here, and who here owns anything newer than a VF? Until Holden sell something I want I will not buy one and I bet most people are the same.

Yep. I have not ever ventured into a Holden dealership to buy a new car. Toyota several times.

Toyota has been for me too but no longer as they too have ceased selling here anything that suits me. There is probably only two vehicles now sold new in Australia that suit me and that is the Ram1500 and the Nissan Patrol wagon. There is the Lexus LX570 too but those are near $140k and still need expensive modifications to be useful (remove hydraulic suspension and GVW upgrade). At a pinch I could make do with a 200 Series GXL (can’t get petrol in GX) but these cannot tow a decent load and also be functional without a GVM upgrade which is also expensive. Plus another $10k on a Supercharger to make one as good as the Lexus or the Ram is standard.

Yeah we are looking for a new car at the moment. There isn’t really anything that excites me. We need to fit three kids/young adults in. Needs to be able to handle gravel roads and not use too much fuel. Oh and if it handled nicely that would be a bonus. Any suggestions?

A used V6 Hilux auto. Similar economy to a 202 powered HZ wagon. Sure will use 2-3L/100 more outright using E10 than the diesel version but will go forever and you'll never save the purchase price difference, especially when E10 is typically 10-20c/L cheaper which just about levels the equation.

There are cars that you can buy new that do what you want, but bits for them can get expensive as they are often European and most of the diesel versions have DPF's now which you won't want.

Less than 5 year old low kM Kluger or RX350 are good value and everything spares wise is Toyota price. You'll buy a far newer Kluger pretty cheap too. Both are again 13-14L/100 though, but on E10.

The only other thing I can think of is a Holden Wagon, lower kM VE-VF will be cheap in a V6.

I know it is a diesel but look at the pricing on Mitsubishi Triton. They are very cheap, and have 5 year new car warranty. Gutless and utilitarian but OK and not a piece of junk like a Great Wall or the likes. A friend bought one recently, white, dual cab, auto GLX+ 4x4 one step up from the base vehicle so it had alloys and carpet from memory. Was $31990 drive away. They are dearer advertised at the moment but you'll buy better if you try especially if you wait for 2018 plate selloff:

Depends on how many passengers you want to carry. I test drove a new Acadia last week & it was very impressive. Same basic drivetrain as the current ZB AWD V6 (3.6 L, 231 kW/ 9-speed auto), but in an SUV style body.

It's basically Holden's version of a Kluger.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

5 people and it needs to have a full size spare wheel. AWD or 4WD so you can use tyres that can handle gravel roads.

Do you need to tow much? Those Tritons seem to be reliable, just have very small engines.
