When I bought my HQ XW8 a few years ago the previous owner gave me a copy of a document from the RTA, the old transport authority in NSW.
The document is dated 2004 and its titled FOI history of previous operators for motor vehicle registration number ...

Theres a list of all the previous owners with full names and their full address' and dates acquired and dates disposed.
It also has a history of the four different rego plates it had and the dates they were issued.

Do any states still release this sort of info or is that a thing of the past?
Interesting thing to have.

I believe the old way (that probably resulted in that info being released) was to satisfy privacy concerns RMS would release info if the old owners did not respond to a notification about the freedom of info request. Now it is only released if RMS get a positive reply from old owner that they are happy. I did it a few years ago and got no owner details but did get sale years and towns registered in. The original owner did actually call me (I had put my number on form and said happy to pass on)

I got a similar thing from VicRoads around 2005, but it only gave the dates of transfer, and postcode of the person/body who paid for the transfer - not even the name of the suburb. Fortunately the car lived it's whole life in VIC prior to my purchase, so it was easy. When cars crossed borders it becomes very difficult to find records - even as late as the 1990s.
Cheers,

Mick

I found the 2nd owners on facebook the other day and they sent me a couple of photos from 1977.
350 decal on the rear quarter I wonder if the dealership fitted that.
Anyway old mate wants his car back LOL
