I overhauled the front calipers on a mate's LX tonight and am wondering if there should be copper washers between the hoses and the calipers?
One side had a washer and the other didn't. Both appear to seal but I'm unsure if I need a washer for the other side.
Couldn't get them to bleed up after so I suspect the master cyl is shot too (the level in both chambers drops when you bleed the fronts!)
Thanks Dave

From memory they did, but there were a few different types of calipers too. The later aftermarket master cylinders have the ability to share fluid between reservoirs too until it lowers down enough - these are mainly arse about with the small reservoir at the front.

Yes, there is a 3/8" copper washer where the hose screws into the caliper.

Thanks for the replies,

I'll chase those 3/8 copper washers.

Its a 9/76 LX with the early PBR cast iron calipers.
The guy at Rare Spares said these early builds are called an LX with an LH body.
It has a P7369 master cylinder fitted but I can tell it originally had the other type because the pipes to the proportioning valve have been bent to suit the way the fr/rr chambers are changed front to back.

Thanks again
Dave

What a load of rot! LX is an LX! Sure some of the very early LX (like 1975 build) had LH elements to them, but you’ll find that most LX are the same other than changes that happened in line with HX release like the ADR27A engines or normal evolution that happened along the way (like RTS) or with ADR changes. LX didn’t even change trim and paint like LH did (at the HQ to HJ change), HJ actually changed in line with LX release! LX did change paint and trim in line with HZ though, and they got HZ engines too. I’m pretty sure all auto 6cyl LX got HJ and later HX engines too, this first started in LH around 8/75 which is probably in line with LX Pilots. My 2/76 LX SL hatchback has its original QL engine in it when I bought it in 1986, and that number is what is in the Service/Warranty records.

You can’t buy that older type master anymore, all the aftermarket ones are like the later HZ ones that swapped the reservoirs around. You could get an old cast iron one rebuilt though.

Yeah, I agree with HK1837, another myth in the making.

AFAIK all LX up to Feb 77 had the old cast iron PBR callipers. The alloy PBR callipers were used thereafter. This is the same time that the later cast iron master cal & the extra park light on the dash were introduced.

Trying to get the correct DB14 pads was a pain.
All the parts books online and at our local parts place (who are great mostly) listed only the later pads for all LX. The only way I knew what pads the older cast iron calipers needed was through checking the Torana forum.
DB14 were only listed for LH and noone in SA had any, but at least I got some online for about $55.
