Anyone have a PSN change for this?

I'm pretty sure it is 11/81 when the change happened. Found an 11/81 Deville today, L537621 with L31 M38 G70 on the body tag.

won't answer the question, but I have a nagging recollection that change happened for WB and VH at roughly the same time
at the start of Nov'81

It will be at the same time or close to it. I guess it will only be schedule anomalies across Elizabeth and Dandenong along with the low volume of 5.0L auto compared to others and the long lead time on the imported TH350 that would make them change at a very different time. I’d expect the last TH350 cars would be within a week of each other across the two assembly plants. Or at least the predicted car sales dates to be close, as I guess there was always the possibility of a car’s assembly being delayed due to whatever factor and being actually assembled weeks later.

Some 5.0L VH got the T350 auto only in 1981.

So 12/1981 must be the last of the T350 in Holden's.

And we were lumped with that T400 from 10/1974 to Apr or May 1979.

Looks to me that one could get a T350 Auto in a 5.0L Sandman ute for 6 months but not a Sandman P Van because they had ended being produced by then but for std 5.0L P van and ute for 11 months and Kingswood P Van 5 months.
No HZ GTS 5.0L with T350.
HZ Caprice for 3 months with T350
HZ Premier 5.0L sed for 5 months wagon for 4 months.
All the rest 5.0L HZ are 11 months with T350.

So by Jan 1982 Holden's are free of them slush boxes.

The Tri matic Auto was advertised in the HG Holden as the fastest responding auto in the world.

About 5/79 in my experience for the change from TH400 to TH350. The final Sandman utes were about the same time. Sandman van lasted until about 10/79.

You could always get a Trimatic in Holden from HJ through to WB but not behind 5.0L, however Trimatic was standard in Torana 5.0L if you selected auto transmission.

TH400 was a great box, probably overkill behind a 250hp 5.0L though. In North America this engine would have got a TH350. Not sure why GMH fitted TH400 rather than TH350 for the 5.0L. TH400 was the correct box for the HQ L48 350 in that size vehicle, however for 6cyl Chevrolet design 6cyl in South African Holden sized vehicles GMH designed a TH350. So they had it all designed for HJ fitment yet used TH400 here. Behind a SBC or BBC though you wouldn’t want anything but a TH400 or the 4spd version the 4L80E.

To throw a spanner in the works, my WB Deville (sold several years ago) had M38 on the body plate but was actually a factory Trimatic.

It was an 11/81 car but I didn't record the PSN.

To add to that, the VH 'Top 30' models had TH350s & were released on 21 Dec 81, but being built thru HDT, probably left the GMH assembly line in November or even October of that year.

That sounds like an Oops Terry. Body is built by the body plant at Elizabeth to the schedule but when they’ve come to assemble it oops, no TH350 arrived from Victoria for it. Could be a simple stock level error too where there were a few boxes less than there was supposed to be, or someone forgot to change the databases so the broadcast sheet printed showing the correct items. There is fair bit of difference too the biggest being the engine itself. Unless the car had cruise control it’d have the wrong speedo cable through the wrong hole in the firewall, wrong transmission crossmember, wrong gearbox harness, wrong fluid lines, no kick down switch plus a fair bit more. It’d be very cool to see the broadcast sheet off that car.

I like the Tri matic auto much better than the T400 or T350 any day, only I don't like the T Bar shift gate design that Holden used as such defies logic, as why would one have no lock out from drive to neutralBrick wall , so when one ops for a T Bar auto the point is to use the T Bar at times to make the Auto do your commands, because you are driving the car in such a way that such gives you better command for a situation, so one may hold 2ed and at times or you may want to go back to 1st in some situation when fanging it hard.
So we see the T Bar as a enhancing performance device for one who knows how to truly drive a car. if they raced Automatic cars you would not see anyone using a column change auto would you, because such is crap for precision.

The Tri matic auto may be the fastest changing but falls behind the C4 because the C4 auto will not drop back beyond set speed, such is a safety thing for the driver and the auto, problem with the Tri matic is that this box will go back into 1st or 2ed at any speed if selected, so this can destroy the box or may do harm to it.

In the HG Brochure the claim was made about this box and this must of been in a response to Ford advertising of their C4 auto as a driving mans auto that was designed to be used like a manual if you fancy to do such as The XT GT was promoted as being, so Holden with the promoting of the new tri matic had to put some boasting claim forward, it may be faster changing response by bugger all to a C4, maybe just by a whisker and the tri matic is much faster response than a FMX or C6 for sure but I think that the B/W response well.

As for the Tri matic auto they are a totally reliable box that can handle a good 308 easy, the only problem is heat and people driving around with a buggered radiator and not servicing them. but my 308 with a tri matic had a big oil cooler on it that was used because my radiator was a manual one because I had a manual before I put the tri matic in it and I only did this because it was costing me a fortune in busting reconditioned M21 boxes that would not hold together. so I got a auto from the wreckers from a 4.2L HZ put it in and though maybe 3 months it may last and to my surprise it did like 400.000KM Oh it split one torque converter at about 30.000KM.

My mums HJ 202 tri matic got a new radiator but rust scale blocked up the top holes in the tank I could see that when taking off the cap, but my dad rejected any such and his mechanic claimed the same stupid dribble, but the bastard ran hot and the auto oil went black, but the auto lasted well, until the old man put it on it's roof when towing a trailer and that was the end of that car.

Service Communications 1981 page 113, states :- introduction of Trimatic Transmission - WB Statesman and VH commodore with 5.0 litre engine.
The Trimatic was introduced in production at the end of October for VH and will enter Statesman production towards the end of November.

Everything was factory Trimatic, kick down switch & harness, correct engine etc. etc. It had cruise control.

You'd never know then if it was intended to be TH350 and had to be changed to Trimatic or if was a stamping error as with cruise control Trimatic and TH350 use the same speedo cable hole in the firewall.
