nope,,, info I have says both VH sedan and wagons were released on 5 Oct 1981

My VH SL/E top 30 dealer special is dated Nov 81 so they must have pumped them out pretty early as a gift to the dealers. Would have been a pretty cool thing to get back then right at the start of the VH run.

2. Nov 81, Oct 82, Apr 83 and Nov 83.

Which of these is correct? Are Vacationer, Vacationer II and Vacationer III similar? I used to think there were only three issues (81, 82, 83), but it looks like there were 2 issues in 1983.

All 3 VH Vacationers, were just badged "Vacationer", there were no II or III versions. To my knowledge, the only time they had a Vacationer II, was for the HJ series.

AFAIK all Vacationers were released just prior to the Christmas/summer holiday period as a retail special package. The 'on sale' dates I have for the 3 VH Vacationers are Oct 81, Nov 82 & Oct 83 respectively. I checked my old Redbooks & they list the same dates. Where are you getting these other dates from ?

I think that the Top 30 SL/Es, being a special dealer item were probably planned before the VH release & then built early production.

The date I have for the Top 30 is 21 Dec 81 for the media release & because these cars weren't actually 'sold', they were presented to the dealers virtually on that day.

Dr Terry.

I found these dates here: https://www.goauto.com.a...-sl/1981-10-01/4462.html and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacationer

Beside, GM-H People magazine (Dec 82) names 82's issue as Vacationer III, so I assumed there were one more issues:

.. on employee discount scheme, I bought the missus a VH Vacationer wagon (2nd version with 4.2 V8/M20 manual and N10)
+ rear retracting belts and sports instruments and 'delete' stripes' option. The rest of it was what was in the pack ...

I think the author of the article used a bit of poetic licence in that article.

It's probably OK in some circles to use the term Vacationer III for a 3rd issue & even GM-H did tis themselves at the release of the VC Commodore.

The VC sales brochure calls the new models series the "Commodore II", after all it was the second version. A bit like HK GTS 327 series II eh ?

My point was that the 3 different VH Vacationers, were just called (& badged as) Vacationers, without any II or III, although the font used for the decals was different for each.

The 83 Vacationer is the only one of the 3 VH Vacationers for which I have a complete media release. It is dated 30 Sept 83 & states that the car will be available at dealerships during October. I've no knowledge of any April 83 Vacationer.

Wikipedia is just Wikipedia, anyone can put info on there, incorrectly or otherwise & it stays there until someone disputes & corrects it. It is not a reliable source of information.

This is how myths are established & prosper. Someone (like the goauto scribe) puts something in print & from then onwards it become fact. It ends up on Wikipedia, so now everybody thinks it is correct.

This is one of the reasons I wrote my books, there were so many myths regarding Holdens history that it needed correcting.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not infallible, there are many errors in my earlier books, so as new info becomes available these matters are corrected & I'm always willing to discuss any facts, especially if somebody has literature to back them up.

To be honest, Goauto and Wiki were the only sources which wrote about 4 dates instead of 3, so I doubted.

I was told once there were two runs in the VC series Vacationer's. Apparently the second run had rear head restraints. But so called person wouldn't post up a brochure info, even if there was one about it.

That is quite possible, if they sold better than expected then why not ? Just make another batch.

If Holden did do another run, they would've been the same basic spec & made only a month or 2 later than the first batch. I doubt that there was a different brochure though.

They did exactly that with the HQ SS, the first 1600 units sold out very quickly, so they made another 1000 soon after.

AFAIK there was no press release or official announcement of any type for the 2nd run of SSs.

I think the same happened with VS SS ute too.

Terry, just spotted you have XY8 as the HQ 1974 Holiday model, the sometimes (rightly or wrongly) called "Winter Vacationer". I wondered where you found the code? The reason I ask is in HJ XY8 is called CHEVROLET MODEL EQUIPMENT, applicable to WS69 and WT69. It looks like it was there from the release of the HJ POA books in 1973. XW4 is still the HJ Holiday model added in July 1975, and XW4 in the HQ POA books was still being revised into June 1974. There is no XY8 but the latest date the page was revised that it would have been on is late August 1973. Lots of other POA page are revised up until late HQ though. It might be a case of Engineering and Sales codes differing, something like Engineering calling the 6cyl Deville 81569 XS8 but Sales calling it 81369.

Not entirely clear which engines were used for export VK's. Most sources say only Starfire was engine to be used exclusively for export VK. However Indonesian site says there were 1.9 and 2.8 (173 engine)for sale. I thought 173 engine was discontinued together VH, but possibly early VKs could still be exported with 173 alongside Starfire. Could this be?

The VK Royale was starfire or 3.3 ( later 3.3 EFI) are you thinking of the batch of VPs we had landed on us ? as in VP 2.8 dual rams. Thanks Mark.

I saw one of those on Lankawi, it was a VS from memory. I think it was called an Opel Calais. Had a 2.6L ram induction engine IIRC.

Thanks. I'm a little confused about the V8 engine lineup VK's (non-SS and not-HDT).

5.0 L31 (SL, Berlina, Calais)only auto M40 (1984)

5.0 L31 V5H (BT1 pack) only manual M21 (1984)

4.9 LV2 (SL, Berlina, Calais) first 1985 onwards - manual M21 or auto M40

4.9 LV2 V7X (Calais. BT1 pack) first half 1985 - only M21

Questions:

Is V7X a modified V5H for LV2?
Was V5H an option for L31 Calais?

aarrrh... no
all 308s then 304s were available on ALL models .. with manual or auto behind them
for example
SL sedan or wagon in 134 pack? yours with 308 M21 (later 304 +m21)
cops had L31 with V5H and LV2 with V7X with autos (and M21 of course) All BT1s got the 'better'engine
and
I personally had a 234 pack Berlina (GMH co car I bought.. it even had a factory sunroof) with LV2 and V7X and M21
with FE2, LSD and alloys.. a luxo style SS Applause see pic

plus 334 pack Calais (5.0 with V5H and M21) became the source of a great number of HDT conversions to 'Director'
Golfing buddy had one (with a T5 supplied by HDT plus Grp A exhaust.. great car that with leather!)

Very nice car, Smitty2! I see Family 2 wheels, were they offered for VK or is it just a special order for GMH employees?

And V7X option was different from V5H?
