For anyone that may have one or recall...these are the small chrome sports aircleaners fitted to the WW-stromberg 161s.

I have one I bought some time ago but was reluctant to do anything with it as there was a hole 'drilled' in the rear of it, assumed non-original. I have just located another for sale, exactly the same.

So what's the hole for?

A clip fits into that hole to support the PCV hose. Have a look at a stocker with a black air cleaner, same hole, same position.

I vaguely remember one on our HR 20 years ago.....is it a small U-shaped clip with a small tab that holds it in, but doesnt stop it from turning? Im guessing later models replaced it with the spot-welded tab strip?

Does anyone make these anymore, did a quick search of Rare Spares but nothing.

By the way, was there another model that used this aircleaner on a single barrel standard base, as per my pic? I did a search and came up with old ads mainly, but all were in 1-bbl bases, not the WW of the 2800-S? Another guy claims his GTR only ever had the single barrel with this air cleaner??
cheers

The one shown has a single barrel base on it, it was quite common to find these and 186S air cleaner assemblies with single barrel bases. Mainly due to many putting after market air cleaners on theree GTRs and 186S, leaving a lot of S air cleaners, cheap as chips at swap meets in the 80s.

Yes the LJ had a standard 202 engine, no S motor, but had a standard air cleaner.

Terry I think it was the 2850S that had the hook on the back.

Not too sure what you have there but my LC GTR 161S has no hole whatsoever and no hook,or clamp screw as its called in my repair manual.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, maybe there were a few variations. It shouldnt have the clamp screw if it has the original 2-barrel base, the WW-strombergs have the bridge fitted to them with the stud fixed in place.

"Terry I think it was the 2850S that had the hook on the back."

Did they use this style air cleaner, maybe thats why some have the hole and others dont?

Hi Guys.

Im with Warren, I think that it is an LJ GTR air cleaner. I missed the the T-handle protruding from the base. The base is definitely for a single barrel Bendix-Stromberg.

The chrome top was used on both LC & LJ GTRs, prior to ADR27 (Sept 73). According to the parts books neither the 2600S nor the 2850S, which both use that chrome top, did not get the PCV hose clip, but the LJ GTR did.

Thanks Dr,
So if they have a hole...its for the LJ GTR which should be 2-bbl on a 202? Heres a pic I found, doesnt help much with the hole but on an LJ. Was the 2600-S the only one of the type to have decal on top? And are we certain that these were only used with 2-bbl carbies?

Here is a pic of the 2850S,decal on the rocker not on the aircleaner.

Cheers.

Good one Rally, pity it doesnt show a clip from that angle! I guess if theres a callout decal on the valve cover it would leave the aircleaner top blank.

Thanks again for all the replies, sorry for the silly qs! Hopefully someone else learns soemthing from it all!

No, an LJ GTR has a single barrel carby, not a WW.

The pic of the first (yellow) car clearly shows a single barrel carby.

The air cleaner you show is definitely off an LJ GTR.

LC GTRs were the only Torana to get a WW carby (on both the 2600S & 2850S).

Now I realise, after looking at those pictures, the clip is not required on a WW carby because the hose enters at the rear of the carby base. On a single barrel set-up the hose is much longer & goes around the front side of the manifold, so it needs the clip.

Thanks Lads, think we sorted it out at last! I sorted through my box of old Holden junk and found some clips I didnt know I had, usual story... and now have a few more mystery holes plugged! Ignore the transfer, its for display and nobody is likely to point out the clip error! I hope. The other is EH/HR type.
thanks all

Terry,

Only the LC GTR had the chrome air cleaner, the LJ used the standard black air cleaner of an HQ 202.

You can see in the first picture how the base does not fit neatly to the lid.

I dont follow, the air cleaner I showed in pics with single barrel base fits as perfectly as the standard aircleaner with the same base.

you are right, just the photo.

But like I said, they never came on the single barrel base.

Warren, its at this point I beg to differ.

AFAIK, the LJ GTR had the same style chrome top as the LC GTR & had a chrome rocker cover to match. Ive seen too many unmolested LJ GTRs with this set-up. This changed in late 1973, when ADR27 was introduced & they had to add the PCV filter, so they had to then fit a black snorkel type air cleaner. The early LJ GTR sales brochure also promotes a "low impedance air cleaner assembly".

To add to that, the LJ parts manual lists a different air cleaner for "3300 exc, XU1" separately from the 2250 & 2850 stockers. Now the problem there is, that they arent listing the one fitted to 1973 3300 non-GTRs. Maybe thats just a mistake.

The clips you are showing on those air cleaners are part number SP1778 and SP1779 which are engine bay wiring clips for HK HT HG and the bonnet washer pump hose retainer clip . The clip you want is a larger "J" hook which are on all the old HKTG 161 186 bangers , but not 186s . I would have thought the LC GTR air cleaner would have deleted this clip also like 186s as the PCV hose runs into the carby rather than the manifold like a 186 . The hose on both of these engines is different .
But if LJ GTR used a single barrell carby and chrome base then it would make this air cleaner correct for LJ GTR then .
Just my 2 cents worth.

Hi Guys... yes old post but left me a little confused. I have one with the single barrel base and no hole for PCV or brackets. So what does it suit?

This is an old post isn't it.

To recap, all 3 GTR motors (2600S, 2850S & 3300) had the chrome air cleaner top. But the LJ 3300 only had a single barrel carby, while the two LC engines got the WW 2-barrel, meaning that the bases were different.

On the LC series the PCV hose is much shorter & goes the rear of the carby base, so therefore doesn't require the clip. The hose on the LJ is much longer & needs the clip, in the same fashion as the stock black air cleaner.

Logic would suggest then that the LC chrome top had no hole for the clip, while the LJ chrome top did get the hole.

The base of the LJ unit is the same piece as the stock black one. The base of the LC air cleaner is the same as the HR/HK/HT/HG 186S. The 186S however had a snorkel top.

Just to confuse the issue the late very LJ GTR (with ADR27) got the black HJ-style air cleaner with a snorkel & PCV filter.

To answer Silverfox's query, that air cleaner sounds like an amalgam of an LJ base & an LC GTR top.
