I'm fairly sure they will swap fine, I swapped a trimatic for a 3 speed and from memory didn't have to change anything.
The tailshaft, speedo cable and rear mount all worked

Is it an aussie 3spd or an old crash box?

If you could tell us what model series your car is, we could then ID your gearbox.

Dr Terry
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

can you go from 2nd to 1st with the car moving without grinding? do you have to double clutch for this change??
Old holdens brought on the spot, quick decision, cash paid.

The synchro 3 speed bolts to the bell housing from the gearbox side with 4 bolts & the threads in the bell housing. It will have the clutch fork actuated by either a cable, a linkage or hydraulically with the slave cylinder on the side of the bell housing and pushing towards the back of the car (unless you have a cable clutch bell housing modified to hydraulic).

The crash box bolts to the box from inside the bell housing with the threads in the front of the gearbox. It will have a hydraulic clutch mechanism with the slave cylinder beside the gearbox pushing towards the front of the car.

I can go into the differences on how the two different box's selector linkages work but you should have enough detail above to tell.

The trimatic will fit where the synchro box lived no changes at all to the cross member, tail shaft, speedo cable or even the yoke.

If you have a crash box then you are up for a shorter tailshaft with a different yoke, a different cross member and probably a new speedo cable.
