Last sunday I purchased fuel from my local shell outlet and got $25 worth of gas and $50 of V-Power . As it is only a short trip I ran on petrol and b4 i put the car back into the garage i noticed that it idled a bit rough and thought nothing of it and turned the motor off as it was still cold . Its a dual fuel 186 and the next morning it started ok and after warm up i switched it on to gas and ran fine and flicked back on to petrol just b4 driving in to the yard at work as i allways start and finish on petrol and it ran rough then too . But when i went to start up again at home time it would stall after a few seconds so i didnt bother and started on gas .

My local grease monkey did a fine job 3 weeks ago and it ran perfect on both fuels until now . He said a rusty fuel tank can cause issues ! So soon as i got home just in case i rang shell and as i allways keep my reciept and registered my complaint and they r going to get back to me . Does stalling and rough running a symptom of dodgy fuel ? Has anyone experienced contaminated fuel with shell or any of the other bozos ? What is the procedures they follow ? Have I got a leg to stand on as i have heard stories they clean there hands of these problems very easily .

I will run on gas only until i work out the problem as to avoid any possble damage to the engine but my mechanic said ther could b some dirt in the carby and it may just need a cleanout .

Check your fuel filter and see whats in there. They also say if you fill up straight after a fuel delivery you could possibly get dirty fuel due to the agitation in the servo tank. I think you need to eliminate all possible causes though before you blame the servo outright. it could be any number of other mechanical problems, from points to a vacuum leak, plug leads, plugs etc etc.

only serviced a few weeks ago with new points , condensor , and plugs and all the leads were tested . But i will check the filter asap . Koz it runs perfect on lpg i think the petrol could be the culprit .

1970ht, I had the same problem the other day when I filled up my HQ 350 with V-Power. I've always run it on 95 octane but I pulled up to the bowser and realised that there was only 91 or 98, so I went the 98 as someone had already pulled in behind.

I experienced the rough idling and the whole motor was shuddering, but it didn't stall on me. Seemed OK once the revs were up. I was just going to take it on the next long run I go on to use the fuel up and then go back to the 95 fuel and see how it goes. It has been idling perfect for about the past year so I put it down to the fuel.

Has anyone else noticed this business of 91 and 98 on the bowsers with no 95? The missus was at another petrol station the other day and usually puts 95 in her car too, and was in the same boat as me so used V-Power.

I only use 98 in the HK and I only put 20 litres in at a time because I would be lucky to do 50k per month and I don't mind sticking the boot into it, maybe the punters in my area use more 98 than other places, dunno.

So far so good, but I did make wholesale changes to get it to run as smoothly as possible, ie, new carby, new manifold, new HEI dissy (non chinese), new leads, new plugs, tank purge and new filter. Don't reckon she's game to play up now, lol.

Ive never had a problem with a car that could be attributed solely to fuel.

(unless i didnt put enough in, lol)

I used to work in a motorbike shop and V-Power/Optimax used to do funny stuff to the sparkplugs on high performance bikes and make them run like crap. As a result I just tend to steer clear of it no matter what vehicle I'm in.

Greetings, It is the fuel that is causing the issues. Fuel is a general term covering a wide variety of hydocarbon compounds used in internal combustion engines. If the only variable in a poorly running engine is the fuel then that must be the cause of the poor running. Any finely tuned engine will be at the mercy of sub-standard fuels. Petrol bought from service stations varies greatly and this will cause different engines to behave differently. Bad fuel is a big problem today.
look out, the guru is coming through...

I reckon there are far to many variables to diagnose the problem in this thread fullstop. Just cause it runs fine on gas does not mean the petrol is 100% the problem. You could have a stuffed fuel pump, a hole in the fuel line, a blocked fuel filter etc etc. These can all happen in an instant.
Why are you running such a high octane fuel anyway. Does the engine have very a high compression ratio?
Let us know what the diagnosis is please. Iyt would be interesting to see a proper comparison between how cars run on different pump fuels. Tested on a dyno, not seat of the pants.

changed the fuel filter last nite and it now runs like normal on petrol . Just wasnt prepared to run the risk if the fuel was the issue koz it was so soon after leaving the servo ( just lucky i guess ) koz the motor is only 3 yrs old ( standard HC ) . The guy who did the rebuild recommended i use 98 for the best performance and it doesnt hurt the hip pocket from the savings on gas . I did think about the fuel pump and glad it only cost me $6 to rectify the problem and not send it back into the workshop .

I was reading on the Shell site that the fuel you bought has some sort of cleaning agent in it(which is meant to remove deposits from the combustion chamber/piston).I wonder if it shifts deposits from the fuel tank also?
