As a background this car has been owned since 1974 so it's history from then is known and nothing has been altered since then.
It is registered as a 1969 Holden and looks like a HT.
Body Plate says:
81837
2807986-10
TRIM-PRIME
TOP- (blank)
PAINT- (blank)
There is no ADR plate.
Numbers on steering box are: 3J9.
Number stamped on firewall is:
HG21249A.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how a HT has a HG chassis number or can add any info from the numbers shown?
Any ideas on assembly from these numbers?

It is a replacement body shell and would reflect the shell it replaced. So I would say that sometime in 1970 to 75 the car was smashed and written off. The standard practice back then was to buy a new shell (all replacement parts after HG production started are HG).
The car was rebodied and re registered as the 1969 HT. BTW this is the 10th 81837 replacment body shell, so 9 81837s had the same treatment before yours.

When I was looking at a V2 to VZ Monaro I found a series I that had a VZ body, same thing.
It got my attention because it was painted Turismo. It had the US body (fuel tank in boot) but series I dash etc.

yes this car was real, it had a new compliance plate, issued by the local transport department.
As is the practice today.

my brother had the same problem with his ht-hg 81837 monaro. his had the paint as prime and the trim as nil. australian muscle car mag did a story on it a while ago. turned out it was a round australia rally car in its day. i think leigh robertson? owned the car. we buried it at the browns palains tip in the eary eighties along with a hk 307 4 speed car.kel

So when it comes time to re-register the car, which number does Vic Roads use as the vehicle chassis/vin number? I'm just wondering if the HG prefix might cause any confusion? Edited by user Monday, 31 October 2011 10:05:24 PM(UTC)

Just take the old rego papers and they should have the chassis number on them, ie HG21249A.

I purchased it of the original owner (a mechanic) who built it from scratch using a written off monaro as the donor car hense it has a 350 chev, saginaw 4 sp, fluted guards, monaro dash & steering wheel & monaro tramp rods. Suprises alot of people.

Well the engine bay is cleaned up, but before the engine goes back in;
is there a colour name or code for the red/brown that the top of the steering box was once painted?
Any suggestions appreciated.
