Hi all,

Just wondering if anybody knows of any electronic speedo's (i.e. not cable driven) that can be made to fit in the standard LX SLR torana dash instead of the factory one?

Reason for it is that my mechanical cable is pinched somewhere (definetly not a stripped plastic gear or drive in the box) and I have no hope of replacing it as it was installed before the engine went in (not by me) and I can not get to any of the clamps holding it onto the firewall behind the motor (and don't really want to drill new holes to run it through etc.

Cheers,

Paul E

Have you tried unplugging the dash end of the cable, and dripping some lubricant down, in case it's just dry and sticking? Or is it definitely jammed or kinked?

Jason.

Would it be easier to cut the old cable as close to the engine as you can, out of sight, and then run a new cable.

Got to be easier than say getting a Commodore speedo, fitting the LX face, mounting in the dash, modifying the sender and running an e

Yes the cable is definetly kinked - unfortunately, and you can actually see where. Tried lubrication with no noticable effect (using a proper cable oiler - damage already done inside I would say). I really want to avoid fitting another mechanical cable a

I have never done this, but what if you were to put a jack under the gearbox, and loosen (or undo?) the engine mounts a bit... can you get an inch or two movement to make the job easier? It sounds like you'd prefer to re-use the original rather than re-r

Yes, have looked into this Jason. Thanks for the suggestion anyway! That will get me as far as the bottom of the firewall. From here, I can't get more then a finger in anywhere near where the cable runs between the engine and the firewall.

I really

I had my speedo line snap within the housing about six inches away from my speedo. It was a new cable since I just had put in a Supra 5 speed box.

The guys at Diff Technics in Sydney replaced it free as it happened not long after the swap and I g

Thanks Stephen. I will try Diff. Technics next week. I guess it won't hurt to also get a quote from them. I'd say the housing has to also be replaced as the kink I mentioned is actually a slightly crushed housing due to a bodgy job before I got the car (l
