I heard that it is illegal to have a tow bar hooked up if you are not towing, is this true?

My sister recently run into the back of a car with a tow bar...and caused damage to her car....had this car not had a tow bar she would not have hit the car and thus not caused any damage...Should she or will she have to pay an excess?

Can't help you with the liability of the towbar issue, but I don't think she'll get too far unfortunately - just like if you run into a bit of wood hanging 1.2m over the back of a truck, you are still liable yourself, not the truck driver/loader.

If you are talking about having the tongue & ball `hooked up ' , I think you will find it is only illegal if you have a Haymen Reece type tongue& ball which slips into the towbar . This type are held in by a pin which must have a locking mechanism

if you hit a parked car you are at fault , my dad did the same thing not long ago and it was his fault, lucky he had minor damage.
The only law in SA they were looking at was roo bars on city cars but nothing ever came of it.

When getting a roadworthy on my car a while ago (Vic). I was informed that the car is unroadworthy if the tounge is attached and you are not pulling a trailer at that time. If it covers the numberplate, that makes it illegal, in addition to being unroadw

Hi Leith,

In Western Australia, towball or no towball, you are regarded as being at fault if you hit another vehicle in the rear. It's the default system here.

However, if a bicycle rack or wheelchair attachment is fitted onto the towball, then
