I've never looked closely at the heater hose routing on the HQ-engined HG (they had different inlet manifold & lower thermostat housing), but check it out.

Does anybody else here know if that one is correct.

Greetings, A V8 HG van is a rare car so one with a Saginaw is going to be a very rare car indeed and it will have bucket seats which very few vans ever got. You should get the details from the id plates for the numbers collectors here just like above. The colour will most likely be Cascade Green.

I'm with HK1837, the number will be higher than you think.

If we assume that ute/van production fitted with 173/202 was around 3 months (could have been more), this equates to 1/4 of a year's production. In those days, the number of utes & vans sold was high, around 10,000 vans & 25,000 utes per year as an estimate. That would mean around 2,500 vans & 6,000 utes would have been built with the newer engines.

Any comments or further 'guestimates' ??

Dr Terry

well heres 2 vans in these posts high 25000 numbers. so i guess there woulda been approx 26000 HG panelvans

Greetings Davo,

Very impressive figures you posted. Way less than suggested by others. Off topic I know, but would you have the HG Brougham totals at all? They were only built from July through April.

TIA

I have the folowing van rgistration figures for 1968 and 1969.

So 1968 would include HR and 1969 would be HK and HT

Van 4088 1732 31
1969
161 186 253 307 308

Thanks Byron. Can anyone please, if you have seen one in the flesh, tell me what the shift stick looks like in a HT HG Commercial. It has a unique part number 2806281. I am wanting to know if it was chrome, black or just plain or was it longer? I know in the Engineering drawings it looks similiar to the stick that would of been available if you were to option Saginaw four speed in a Kingswood.

Also the shift boot 7430248. Need a photo for reference.

I solved one piece of the puzzle, bucket seats in a panel van HK HT HG did have the cargo board on the back.

My neighbour has a HG van, factory 253 saginaw, but it was fitted with a full length console. Looks as per Monaro. Also has the backing boards on the back of the bucket seats.

Console will have been a dealer fitment or fitted afterwards. You couldn't get a console shift in a commercial, right up until Sandman in 1974 and then only in Sandman until HX release.

It was fitted from new with 253, saginaw 4 speed, black trim, bucket seats, console, GTS dash and black sidewinder stripes and those old 4 spokes mags. It is that light green colour, still original paint. He bought it in 1976/7 and believes it was GMH show car when new. I have referred to this car in another thread and it is slowly decaying away in his back yard. Another one of those fellas who reckons he will restore it some day. Was a nice looking car back in the 70's 80's.

Console will have been dealer fitted, probably the stripes too as well as the mags. If it was a show car then it still won't have got the console in the assembly plant, it most likely was done elsewhere within GMH.

Simon, did you received the pics I e-mailed to you on Saturday ? This car is an original one-owner HG Kingswood ute with a non-console Saginaw floor shift.

I still cannot answer what is different about the stick. It doesn't really look any longer, or sit at a different angle. It is chrome-plated & has a black knob with the shift pattern on it. I suppose you could only tell if you sat a GTS stick along aside it.

I've got two loose non HK GTS sticks in the shed, plus an original HG Kingswood sedan console shift setup. I'll compare the sticks to see if the loose ones are different.

How can I tell if it is a factory 253?

Edit- ok I see that it's an 80170(6 cyl) now

Paint code is 568 0036 , any one know what this is

It's stamped 10/71 so must be one of the last hg's made

568 0036 is Hawthorn Green, which is a fleet colour.

Also, given that the HQ commercial range was announced on 22-Nov-71, for a December release, production must have begun in October.

HK1387, do you have a date for the last HG commercial built ?

Dr Terry
