The HT V8 3speed has a higher torque rating according to the HT Engineering documentation. It is a close ratio 3spd. Different input shaft and cluster gear. It is the equivalent of an M21 3spd as in M21 compared to normal Aussie M20.

It may not be nice to drive though as 1st gear is very short at 2.48:1, it will depend upon your diff ratio and tyre size. Unlike the aussie 4spd though the 3spd has an independent 3rd gear that doesn't have to be the same ratio as 1st, so the 3spd retains its 3.59:1 reverse so at least reverse is OK.

I think you may have missed the bit about the HT V8 box being slightly stronger. It was only the V8 box that differed, the 6-cyl box was the same. The V8 box has a longer front shaft & is not a bolt-in swap.

One thing though, most of the pre-HQ 3-speeds had a 'smooth' case, whereas the HQ onwards had the ribbed case like a 4-speed. This might be considered 'stronger', even if the gear-set is the same.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0
