Hi all,

I'd like to buy a set of exhaust headers in the original 'rams horn' style to suit a 350 small block chev.
Dad removed the original headers and put on extractors about 30 years ago, and since then the originals have gone walkabout.

I've seen rams horn headers for SBC available online, but I want to make sure that if I buy a new set that they will match the original set.

Can anyone give me the GM part code for the original exhaust headers that came out on the 327/350?
Also is there a store/website that anyone can recommend where we can find them?

Thanks a lot in advance :)

Steve

I'm presuming that your alt is mounted on the right and not on the left as were the 307 and 1st type 327's. l/h 3932473. r/h 3855164.
They pop up on ebay but make sure of the numbers because everyone thinks their rams horns are the correct ones.

They are not easy to find any more if you want the originals. HK-HT 307 examples are always on Ebay for sale often as "suit GTS327" which they do suit and fit and do the correct job, but they are not correct as 307's were Canadian and most GTS327's had US made engines. Even the Canadian GTS327 engines had one US exhaust manifold. When it comes to the original 350 manifolds, they are even harder to get than GTS327 examples. All of them used to be easy to find at swap meets and cheap (I used to but them for $25 each) but not anymore, if you find a pair and the seller knows what they are expect to pay $700+ for a pair and you'll have to fight with the later HK GTS327 owners for one of them! And then if you want date code correct to your engine you are talking very small needles in a very big haystack.
The numbers you want according to HT and HG parts books are 3932473 and 3896956. You will find them in the USA, but don't bother if you are restoring to totally original as they will normally be from the wrong engine plant and wrong dates unless you fluke the right date codes. You can see one here, but by the time you pay in US$, pay GTS and freight it gets expensive even if they look cheap:

Not saying the one in the link is correct either, just it has the correct cast number on it. Others here may be more helpful in exact identification, exhaust manifolds changes and exact differences have never really interested me that much as I tend to not use them as I never have stock exhausts. I tended to just pick them up and swap meets and chuck them on the pallet racking. I think in the 20 or so original pairs I have all of them bar two pair have been from 307's!

Yes the alt is mounted on RHS. Thank you for the part numbers :)

Thanks heaps :) I'm not fussed about the dates I just want the headers as the extractors we have on it make some engine work difficult and I want it back to standard as it's due for a new exhaust system as well. Dad had two sets of headers years ago, one set he gave away and the other set lost over the years :( :(
Not bothered by the price either. A new set of after market headers is $500-odd so paying a grand or so for an original set isn't a problem. I just want them whether they come from US or wherever!

Interesting though you quote 3932473 and 3896956 where KBM quoted 3932473 and 3855164. I am intrigued to know the difference.
Thanks for the eBay link!

3896956 is for HG 350 and 3855164 is HK 327. I don't have a HT parts book so not sure which is correct or differences

HK307, and HK327 1st type are 3855163 (LHS) and 3855164 (RHS)
HK327 2nd type are 3932473 (LHS) and 3855164 (RHS)
HT350 are 3932473 (LHS) and 3896956 (RHS)
HG350 are 3932473 (LHS) and 3896956 (RHS).

Unusually in this case the listed part number and the casting number are the same.

For the left hand side, both types listed above have the same sweepback angle, the same kick angle away from the block, and the same effective length. The only functional difference is the absence of an alternator mounting boss on the 3932473.

For the right hand side 3855164 used on all HK307 and 327 has less sweepback, is kicked further away from the block and is longer when compared to the 3896956 used in the HT and HG350.
The 3855164 is an oddball manifold even in the US, and listed for Canadian truck applications. Its use is necessary because of the right hand mounted clutch slave cylinder on HK.

Thanks so much gm5735, very handy and interesting info!

One last question... where do you guys/gals lookup the part #'s for Monaros? Is there a reference book I can buy or is there a reference online?

If you’re really stuck you can quite often get a look at the library.
