Agreed.
This project is awesome mate. Well done! Its better than it would have looked brand new!! You wont know what to do with yourself when its finished...

Just a question. What did you atach the spoiler on with and do you have any good close ups? I have a couple of spoilers to do and am wondering what the best size bolts or screws are and how youve finished it off. Cheers.

Thanks for the nice words.
the car is nice and clean, and looks good in the pics, but its not perfect. obviously i cant make everything new! some people are ridiculous with the attention to detail. im still waiting for rare-spares to reproduce silver HJ dash facias and consoles. :(
As for the spoiler, you mean the front one right? Thats attached with two screws each side through from the wheel arch, two screws going down in the bottom stone-tray under where the number plate would be, and a nut+bolt holding it together at the bottom. ill snap you a couple pics, but its nothing fancy!
looks like i hadnt updated this thread since the last few things were done, but its all finished now. will be regoed either late next week, or early the week after (have to book in a time to go over the pits on Monday).
front/rear brakes and suspension:

and the 15x7s are on too. wasnt keen on it at first, but grew on me REALLY quick! the wheels are only one inch further out all round, but looks stupidly tough to me. :D

the car drives brilliantly too. good springs, shocks, swaybars, brakes, tires, etc.. really help the overall drive. so ill probably be putting a fair few kays on it over the next couple years (until its time to pull it apart and do it all again! ;) ).

well, its done! thats it! good, great, fantastic. :D
sorted the rego out very early this morning. screwed my new plates on it, and cruised away.
camera phone pic at vicroads:

spent the rest of the day just driving around. the car ran like an absolute champion - no trouble at all!
snapped a handful of pics on my way about.

thats all for now.

thanks. :)

the reg isnt original, but a personalized version of what the original would have been.
'I' was the prefix used in VIC when the HJ was new
'HJ' for... well, HJ..!
'476' is because its an April 76 build.
could have easily gone personalized instead, but this original style looks so much better on the cars. where it looks original, but actually has a meaning when you think about it. only s*** part is Vicroads charge $295 for these reprints.. god only knows how they can charge that much for something that would be no harder than a print of a standard issue plate.

i get away with driving this on my P's, as i got my license originally when there was only the power to weight rules, which the GTS easily gets though @ 135kw to 1450kg or so..!

few newer pics for this thread anyway..

WOW nice pictures you take some really good ones. your lucky to have applied to the old rules with the V8, i wish i was born a few years earlier :) i like what you did with the rego, thats the way it has to be done and i am going to do that myself with my Q. get it with my dads mates rego from a belmont he used to own. and the $300 for the rego is rediculous but it must be done.... vicroads are such pricks!! annyay once again great work, hope i see it on the road one day.

cheers

allright...
its been a year since I've updated this; and all is still going tops.
I've done 4000km in it since it was finished in march last year, and (probably not surprisingly!) nothing has changed.
Still just a ton of fun to bring out on the occasional weekend. gets a little too much attention for me, but its a great bloody big yellow thing.. so what can you do!

Here is a bunch of new pics i took the other day..

gotta say the pics are more than flattering..
panel gaps are still all a bit skewiff. i'll get around to that one day!

anyway, all for now.

Still awesome. Panel gaps don't look too bad. The only thing that really sticks out is the left hand side of the rear bumper where it seems to turn down a bit after it wraps around the taillight. Rear bar bracket might have had a slight hit at one stage?

Still one of my favourite builds on here and it's a real pleasure seeing photo's that have been taken properly and taken well.

Lovely...!!...before you "gap" your car take a look at a factory original...they really
weren't that good.

cheers fellas..

havent exactly been too stressed about the wonky panel alignment..! everything shuts properly, and it doesnt leak, so no biggies. just something i'll get around to eventually.
I hadnt actually noticed the bumper down on one end - i think thats a more recent addition. i do push the car into the back of the garage after driving it, bouncing it off the back wall. i think the last section of bumper after the support must be slightly twisted anti-clockwise.
its moreso the front gaps that bother me. the front right quarter is dodgy all over, and seems to turn down towards the front, creating a large gap with the door up near the drivers side cowl. also the gaps either side of the bonnet, along with the crease down the centre. you can see it in the front pic... its just off.

been told many times how bad these were when new too! can even see it on the front of a period magazine (motor manual?) on an red HJ GTS.. theres a great big picture of a low 3/4 shot, and you can see the bottom of the front door stick out!

aaanyway, ill get on to it. :)

Just over a year later, and I'm back for another update.
have only managed 6300km in this over the last 2 and a half years - so only a shameful 2300km in the last 15months. actually hadn't driven in for four weeks, but have been meaning to get it out to take a few update (hey-look-nothing's-changed) pics. Not much incentive to get it out during winter.
Its still running fantastically. Doesn't drain the battery when left sitting for weeks, and manages to start with little fuss. still haven't got a cold start setup on it, but a little extra fiddling when starting from cold is no real hassle. All good all round really. :)

took some carpark shots this time around, but hadn't guessed how bloody hard the yellow would be to show nicely! ah well.

..and the rest of the pics. an overall walkaround.

might get around to taking some more pics in a nicer location, but otherwise that's it for now.

still wanting to straighten up some of the panels a bit; a new carpet, new herringbone in the seats, repaint the rocker covers, detail the diff... etc.. etc..
but i just get busy doing other things, and luckily there's no rush. :)
