Honda Civic’s big Silver Anniversary July 1.
One of the world’s favourite cars, the Honda Civic, turns 25 this month.

More than 11 million Civics, over six generations, have been built since the first model began rolling off Honda’s production line at Suzuka in July 1972.

On its release, the 1.2 litre Civic 1200 was lauded for its classic "wheel at all four corners" packaging, and its up-to-the-minute technology such as an overhead-cam engine and four-wheel independent suspension.

Australia received the Civic in 1973, becoming its third export market after the US and Hong Kong. So far, more than 120,000 Civics have been registered here and the majority are still running today.

Now in its sixth generation, Civic is built in 15 countries and sold in about 140 markets at the rate of more than 600,000 a year.

It’s the same name – Honda Civic circa 1997. Happy Silver Anniversary!

The original 1972 Honda Civic – 25 years old but a breakthrough in its day.

While the three-door Civic Hatch remains faithful to the original design philosophy, Civic is now also built as four-door sedan, two-door coupe (US only) and five-door liftback (European market).

To celebrate Civic’s birthday, Honda Australia is offering a special Silver Anniversary model (guess what colour), with free air conditioning all GLi, VTi and VTiR models.
