G'day painting masterminds, I am almost up to the painting stage of the restoration of my HT Ute, and need to know how much Primer and Top coat I should purchase. I am only starting in the field of backyard repairs and don't know the quantities i need to complete the job. The painting will be done in the garage, want to use acrylic top coat. Any ratio's of paint to thinners would be helpful too. I have two weeks to get this car back on the road, and that includes all the engine mods done. Should be a beauty when finished, will post pics when done.. Also on a seperate issue, does anybody know how to get the rear screen on the ute out without breaking the bastard, I almost got the front one out and then crack (NOOOOOOO) I tell ya tears came to my eyes.

cheers james

I am assuming this is NOT a back to bare metal job?

After you have completed all repairs and flexible body filed it all into shape I recommend a coat of 2-pack primer. This stops filler and hi-fill shrinkage. About 2 litres should do. Thin and catalyse

Thanks Byron,

Most of the car is back to bare metal, as this is the only way I could track down all the rust and dodgy past bog repairs. So I assume I need etching primers?? first then the 2-pack primer??. 6-8 litres jesus thats sounds alot, $$$$.

If it's mostly bare metal use 2-pack etch under the 2-pack primer. You need HEAPS more acrylic top coat than 2-pack, that's why I said 6-8L. You'll use 2L alone under the bonnet, inside the doors, in the tub etc.

Don't you need Heat and extreme dust free conditions for 2-Pack?? Does it cost more??? I'm not painting metalic paints on the ute, so whats a rough price to pay for all this?? I think Green is the colour of choice..

You won't have any problems with the rear window, i assume the front was laminated. They are a nightmare to get out they crack soooooo easy. I found the best way was to carefuuly cut the rubber away and buy a new seal. The rear is toughened and a lot hard

be carefull painting 2 pack as it is very toxic stuff , most paint shops have suits and breathing apperatise in a booth painting this stuff, although good , I would go for acrylic for a begginer if you stuff up its easy to rub back and have another go.

Well guys , went to the paint shop, 4L of top coat will cost $180 (class 1), Etching primer $67 4L, Thinners $35 4L, Top coat Clear $88 4L. Do I need undercoat aswell or is the etching primer enough??? All up the paint should cost around the $400 mark,

also make sure your neighbours don't know about it (unless you live on acreage) as it's now illegal to do this at home in most suburban environments. it only takes one grumpy old git to dob you in, and EPA fines are never small...

You still need primer, and I still recommend 2pack etch and primer. You will also need about 12L of thinners for every 4L of acrylic. Buy cheap stuff for cleanup and gun wash
