Ive just developed a constant winding sound from the front of my engine in a 6cyl ef. I have a funny feeling its coming from somewhere inside the timing cover i thought it was a bearing at first but its not producing the right noises can anyone point me in the right direction cheers!

Give me a ford any day

You replace the serpantine belt recently? Maybe it's just tight and airs being trapped underneath making that noise when it finds it's way out. Ford 2.0 Escort motors are known for this if the rubber timing belt is too tight.

Could possibly be the water pump bearings,if you put a long screwdriver onto pump with motor running and rest your ear on handle you should be able to hear the noise if thats where it's coming from.

if it ain't broke we can improve it.

Remove the serpentine belt completely, start the engine (don't run it for too long as your water pump is now doing nothing). If the noise is still there you have an internal fault. If the noise is gone then the problem is with your idler pulley (most like

Have you had the head gasket replaced recently?

My guess is thatyou have excess tension on your timing chain tensioner. If this is left unchecked, the chain will eventually wear through the chain guides, enabling the chain to slip and assist in destrot
