yep, what a wombat ... thats what you get for working in poor light, without your glasses and trying to get a job done quickly ...

Took out the speedo drive from the trimatic to check colour and number of teeth (speedo reading too fast). Fist attempt to put it back in and the cable not successful ... second attempt okay, all went in smoothly ... take car for run around the block, stuck in first and speedo not working. So ...

Back under and fix vacuum modulator pipe which wasn't in flexible vacuum hose properly. Yay. then take out speedo cable from box and lo and behold ... missing speedo drive. Oh dear.

Yes, have inserted finger into (gear)box and felt nothing except plastic gear wheel parallel to gearbox ... is this the culprit or is this a gear wheel meant to be there for the speedo drive to work with??

Do i have to drop the extension housing or (shudder) open the box to get it out?? whatever, the answer ... i see dollar signs ... and yes, i have done this procedure before with no problems!! Oh, one more thing ... its not my car!!

Support the main body of the gearbox with an axle stand or jack. Remove the tail shaft and rear support. 4 bolts to take off the extension housing. Find the speedo drive and reinstallation is the reverse. Just remember to seal extension housing to

Yep, extension housing has to come off for sure.

Hopefully the little retaining clip isn't lost in the bottom of the box either.

You might be wise to order one in from Holden before beginning the job, in case it's lost or broken. Couple of bucks ma

Drain some oil out first or you will have a mess. I also jacked the rear up high and properly supported it and also put another backup set of blocks under it. Not bricks never use bricks or stone.

Dont understand what you have said? If you can feel the drive gear on the shaft then its still in place. You cant loose the driven (cable) gear in the box it cant fall off the cable and fall in? Did it fall off when you had the speedo cable off?

There's 2 gears in there - the spiral one on the output shaft, called the drive gear, and the one on the end of the cable, called the driven gear.

Now that crowe mentions it, I'm not sure which one it the original post is referring to either now!
