G'day All,
I put new brake shoes in the back of the tonner and checked the drums, everything seemed kocher as far as tolerences are concerned but my hand brake wont hold me pointing up a hill rolling backwards , works fine the other way, the handbrake cable is at its maximum adjustment, and I adjusted the brakes properly using the workshop manual. I suspect I need a new handbrake cable, is it a common thing for them to stretch that far so that they cant be adjusted even with new shoes? I have never had one that stretched before, or is it a sign of somethiing else? The brakes work fine with the pedal and all seem to brake evenly without pulling to one side or anything, the problem is only with the handbrake. Any advice appreciated. Cheers.Russ.

P.S. I wonder who the ****ing Einstein was at holden that decided to keep the drum brakes on the rear for so many years after they got the discs worked out on the front, Ive had no trouble with my front brakes but no end of trouble with those damn drum brakes.

(2) Ensure that the drum fits on snug. Some older drums need a

Slacken the cable right off using the adjustable threaded thing whre the the handbrake cable joins the rear cable.
Jack the rear of the car up and, in turn, adjust each back wheel up tight so the screw adjuster cannot turn any further. jump on the brake

The self adjusting ratchet system should pick up the slack...unless u have the assy ass about, then it will NEVER tension.
