I have fitted a Mallory dual point dissy (mech advance only) to my HZ 253 and need to know the tricks in getting it to run sweet. I have fitted new points, condensor, plugs & leads and set up with primary points 26 degs and secondary combined 33 degs. I have a fluffy spot around 1500+/-...seems flat and then revs ok from there. The idle is set @900rpm and sits @6-8 degs advance, falls to 0 degs @800 & below. Is this the norm???? Question, how to tell if the yellow wire is resisted....without attaching to coil it will give 12.2 volts to my meter, attach the GT40R coil & 8 volts and 9-10 when running? The voltages that you are stating suggests that you have the correct resistance wire.
Do you have the full 12 volts to the coil when cranking? If so the resistor bypass is working correctly too. |

I'll have to try that, all I did was test the wire on its own without being connected and got the 12.2v, then I hooked it to the coil and got the other figures. So when its cranking I should see the 12volts.....will let you know.

I'll go into it a bit more & correct myself. When cranking the ballast resistor bypass circuit should cut in & the volts going to the coil should closely match the voltage at the battery terminals (you won't get 12v if your battery only has 9-10v under lo |

I checked it out and seem to be working ok...which is more than I can say for the points dissy, sucks fuel like it only costs 70 cents per litre!! Can't get a happy medium between the timing advance and runnung so I ordered a new HEI dissy with coil in ca
