G'day Guys,

Among other things, my Power Steering assembly is leaking.

I think I have tracked it back to where the steering shaft enters the Steering Box.

There appears to be a metal ring with a section cut out (like a circlip but thicker) around the shaft, which looks like it should be pressed into the steering box to hold a rubber seal in around the shaft? but its just sitting on the steering shaft between the flex coupling and the steering box (i.e not pressed in).

I think this is where all the fluid is leaking from.

My question is first, should I press the ring into the steering box?

Secondly, whats the easiest way to do this with the steering box still on? I'm doing enuf stuff to the car, and want to get it on the road soon, so would prefer to fix it in situ.... or do I have to take it off?

Does it make sense that this is the cause of my leak?

Thanks!

Hi wazza187.

It would be best not to press the ring into the box.

That ring is the clip that retains the dust cover, it is not the seal itself. The seal is under that , but is fitted from inside the box, before the shaft is fitted. You will permanen

Thanks Terry,

Prob not looking to get a new system right now, and no doubt they are hard to rebuild... In the meantime, are there any 'simple fixes' or common issues with these pumps that I can 'have a crack at' before spending ~$300 on a otherwise fin

Well the quick & dirty fix is to buy a bottle of Nulon power steering conditioner & stop leak. Just top up your system with it until it stops leaking it out. You may go through a couple of bottles & have near straight Nulon in it before the leak ceases bu

Sounds Good, I'll give it a go. If the alternative is to replace the whole unit, I've got nothing to lose.
I can always get a replacement after that.

Thanks!

I don't mind some of the band-aid fix's for "slightly" leaking diff's, gearbox's and motor's (and that's being a road bike rider!) but when it comes to STEERING, suspension and brakes........... there SHOULD always be that thought in the back of your mind

Yeah, no worries.

The cars been in the shed for a couple of weeks as ive been working on it, and there is only a small 'nuisance' leak with the steering.

I too ride a RoadBike everyday, so I won't be silly about it, but its really not worth replacin

Worst case scenario, if the P/steer assistance fails, you still have steering - just that it becomes rather heavy!
