I'm asking on behalf of a work collegue. What is the correct timing mark to use on this engine.
He says the Gregory's workshop manual is showing 73 teeth and the Nissan Manual is 72 teeth, but the engine is currently set at 71 teeth. If this is the same engine as fitted to VL Commodore without the turbo, which is the correct mark to set at?
Thanks in advance.

Its 53 teeth..counting from the bottom timing mark up the right hand side of the belt...the side without the tensioner.

Hi Guys.

There is something wrong here, will these engines even run if they're 20 teeth out, because 53 is the correct count, I've fitted plenty. There's only 115 teeth on the belt in total. If you count up the drivers side it would be 63 including the
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

I didn't want him to use my info and stuff himself around..even though nothing is going to hit (valve to piston)...from memory each tooth is something like 6 degrees..cant see it running 120 degrees out.
I advanced mine 1 tooth to try kill the flat spot.

"I advanced mine 1 tooth to try kill the flat spot..it was semi sucessful."

Slightly off subject but in the early days these motors in skylines had a bit of a flat spot from a dead stop, we had success with fitting a resistor to the coolant temp sensor
