Gday,

I am trying to sort out a problem with a mates badly pinging 308 in an LX. The car was purchased without any real info on what mods have been done to the original engine. What I do know is that compression pressure averages about 185 psi, the engine has roller rockers and I suspect big valve heads. Carby is std, Dizzy looks std. We are running 98 pump fuel and I set the static timing at 12 deg. The car goes pretty hard but is pinging badly under acceleration. The engine has a romac balancer, with the deg advance markings upto 40. With the timing light attached and revving the engine, it would appear that we are getting around 40 deg total advance

How much total advance should a std 308 have?

I then backed the static timing back to TDC, and went for another run. This time the pinging was not as bad but still well and truly there, and the engine was running like a dog.

It would seem that the compression is not over the top, we are using good fuel. What am I missing here?

Thanks, any help will be much appreciated.

Regards
Paul.

Hi Paul.

You don't mention the camshaft. You can't run a stock dissy with a modified camshaft in a modified engine & expect good results.

Get a dissy guy to set it up, preferably on a dyno.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

40 degrees total is too much. 36 would be closer to the mark. On a stock dissy it's not really easy to adjust the centrical advance, so maybe you might be better to put it on a dyno, with a good dyno operator, then get the dissy recurved as well. If it ha

Thanks for the replies.

I would have no idea what cam is in it.

Your comments all makes sense. it looks as though this engine has had the std sump and manifold slapped on in a hurry as if all the good gear has been pulled off when sold.
