Hi guys,

Need a quick question answered if possible.

Does anyone know what the legal / engineering requirements are to put a WB tonner cab onto a HJ ute chassis? My ute body is fairly well stuffed (heaps of dents and a bit of rust coming through now), and I possibly have the opportunity to pick up a complete WB tonner reasonably cheaply. The tonner cab needs new floor pans and a couple of small bits of rust knocked out of it, but is in way better nick than my ute.

Reasons I am thinking of going this way are;

1. The tonner is a complete roller so everything I need is there.
2. I could put a bit of time into the tonner cab and when I'm ready to do the swap, would be minimal time with the ute off the road. Have a spare front end so could do all the panel beating / painting before doing the body swap.
3. I don't want to do up the tonner cab on it's chassis beacause I want to use my red 308 and also the ute (74 HJ) is still currently rego'd. Tonner is an 84 model 202 but no rego, so I'm guessing I would have dramas with the red motor.
4. I believe that the ute/tonner would then still be considered a 74 model HJ.

I am thinking, remove the rear cab mounts from the tonner chassis and weld them to the ute chassis, then a nice short fabricated tray.

If anyone definitely knows what the requirements are, or who I need to speak to, could they let me know please.

Cheers
Kev

I've seen it done but looks stupid as the tonner is about 6 inches longer in the wheelbase. You can reverse the ute/van springs and then move the rear shocky crossmember back to suit. But in the end it would be cheaper and faster to do up the WB tonner ch
