Hi,
I have a '76 HX Ute. I've seen pics of these types of Utes with big subwoofers mounted behind the seats, or between the seats on the back wall of the Ute.
Most of these installs cut holes in the back wall, recess the sub into the rear wall, and probably box it in / weld a new wall behind it in the Tray to protect it from the elements.
Is this Legal? Does it need an engineers certificate?

There's no problems with doing that and you don't need an engineers. As you're not cutting anything structural (you have a full chassis) you can do it. It would be different if it was on for example a Ford ute where they are unitary construction.

Would the cops see things the same way? If I had to argue it, are there any ADR's that could have been infringed?
Does it infringe any regulations regarding crash safety etc?

I saw a TV show `is it good for you`, they did a noise test on a club live band it was 107 decible at the rear of the club , a young guy with a hatchback had subs amps etc. played it at his normal driving volume and t

ADR's are OK as are all the regulations. You're not infringing anything.

Here's a thought. If you are worried about cutting huge holes in the rear firewall of your ute to mount speakers into why not make complete enclosures for your sub woofers in the tray & have them ported to the cabin. That way you are only cutting 2"-3

cause then you're turning it into a bandpass enclosure rather than a sealed or ported (reflex) enclosure. Some subs are great for this but you will get a totally different frequency range and transient capabilities from the sub.
