Hi guys,
I am dropping a VS engine into my HT. But a bit confused about the fuel system. Everywhere I go I am getting different answers. Some people tell me a need a surge tank and 2 fuel pumps, some say that is crap. Surely someone out there has done this. What is the easiest way?? Here is what I was thinking.... I use the original pickup in the tank and hook that to a high volume low pressure pump that feeds into a surge tank in the boot. From the surge tank, i run the high pressure EFI pump to the engine. Then either run the return line back into the breather on the tank, OR run the return back into the surge tank and have an over flow from the surge tank back to the main fuel tank. The only problem I can see is the first pump has to 'suck' the fuel up, which i have heard is bad news and most pumps wont suck fuel up anyways, they only push the fuel...
So is this idea crazy?? is there a pump that can 'suck'
What other options do I have??
Thanks.

You need a surge tank. They work without one, but it's stupid. Like running an engine without an adequate supply of oil. The high pressure fuel pump needs a constant supply of fuel as it uses the fuel for lubrication. What you describe will work perfectl |

Best to run the return line from the engine back to the fuel tank Plus another return line from the top of the surge tank back to the fuel tank (to keep the air out of the surge tank).
Why do it this way you ask? Well if you run the engine's return |

Jim is right, but it works pretty well the way I described. You have to bleed the swirl pot initially.

Thanks guys, seems I am on the right track then. I was thinking of using the existing steel fuel line to the motor, then installing a new rubber one for the return line. Is this OK? or would you run new hose the whole way?? Where do I get one of these

Facet is the brand. Most auto parts suppliers. They are a little square box with hose fittings either side. About $75. Your idea with the fuel line will be OK, but replace any existing rubber. make sure there is flaring on the open ends of the steel line |

Thanks Byron, you say that this facet low pressure pump will suck the fuel up no worries?? I have heard that most fuel pumps only push fuel and they wont suck it.
Thanks again

I have one mounted on the inner guard of my HZ tonner, about level with the top radiator hose, and it seems to work OK. If you are worried mount it on the floor, which is lower than than most of the fuel tank.
