Guys

My mate has been having troubles with the LS1 in his HSV VX GTS. It’s a C4B 300kW Calloway engine. It has about 75,000kM on it. A month ago it started rattling, so he pulled the heads off and found a couple or rollers and the cam damaged, so he bought a new COME cam, rollers and got the ECU reprogrammed to suit the cam. 1500kM later it started rattling again. Pulled it down and all of the cam lobes are stuffed.
Prior to the first pull down, and continuing is the quirk that the oil light sometimes comes on when it’s first started. It was checked out using the diagnostic software at it had huge amounts of oil pressure. He runs it on the recommended Mobil 1 10W-30 but what it was run on prior is unknown – hopefully the servicing Holden dealer used the HSV recommended oil.
Basically the decision has been made to buy a new engine, and put the old one aside. Suburban imports sell a complete new Corvette 300kW engine quite cheaply. They advertise what they have as an LS1 but it’s supposed to be an LS6.

Questions are:

Can anyone shed some light as to if this is a common problem? COME reckoned the block was stuffed – early LS1’s are supposed to be crap blocks?

Apparently the LS6 blocks are better engines. Does anyone know how top pick an LS6? Plastic intake?

What exactly is the C4B engine that HSV put in the VX GTS? If the block is stuffed, can he rebuild the engine using a normal Gen III block out of say a VY? The idea is to rebuild the original motor for the car at a later date and use the new one in a WB 1-tonner or HK Monaro or something like that.

Byron

Byron I was told the problem they had with the early Gen 3 engines was that they had a bad batch of pistons suplied and fitted to them ?.I have never heard of a block problem with them ?.Early ones seem to like leaking at the water pump to block seals as

Discovered the problem. Whomever built these you beaut C4B engines put valve springs in them with about half the spring pressure required. as the car was driven by a lady in her 50's it never got a flogging. But as soon as it was given a rev the followers
