2000 Vectra JSII CD - speedo drops to zero!

I have a 2000 Vectra JSII CD and I am getting very tired of it - the problems are endless and costing me more money than necessary!
There had been a "asthma-like" problem. At idle, the tacho revs erratically between 1 and 2. Later on, it stalled when at low speeds - once I was doing a U-turn, and the steering wheel locked. Imagine!
I got my IDLE AIR CONTROL (IAC) motor replaced for AUD$300+ then adding labour on top, it got up to a total of AUD$700+.
A few weeks later, when driving on the highway at 80km/h, the tachometer and speedometer drops to zero for a second, then jumps back up again to where it should be. All this time, while I was driving!
A week or two later, it starts doing the same thing, but these times, the tachometer and speedometer drops to zero and stays there for a good 5 seconds before it remembers what it was supposed to do, and jump back up to where it should be.
This is a real worry for me.
Has anyone any idea what is the case? And how much it is to fix it?

It sounds like a trip to someone with a scanner to me. It should be logged in the fault codes.They have electric speed sensor and dash from memory.Make sure you do the cambelt when it is due as well on these cars.I have seen the mass of bent valves that
