Anyone had any experience with older Pro stroke stuff? Like late 1990's? Just looking at a stroked 308 red. It is a Pro Stroke crank, which I think were cut and shut Chev cranks back then. Uses Chev 5.7" rods and 350 3.75" stroker pistons. It's pretty cheap, and still goes well but is already at +0.060" and has 90,000kM LPG kM on it.
Just looking at it for the bottom end. I'll hone bore, linish the crank and put new bearings and rings in it plus new VN cam and VN heads for my Overlander. I don't want it to produce 350hp like one of these can. 200hp would be enough. Just want 400-450ft-lb of torque at 2000rpm.
And quickly on the +0.060" topic, is there any truth to the talk I hear occasionally that +0.060 308's get hotter than normal? I believe the old red that was in my Overlander was +60 or +80 and it used to get hot. I controlled it a lot using late model waterpump and 5 row radiator but it still liked to get warm. The VP 304 in it now never gets hot. Just worried that this stroker may get hotter than I'd like. If it is true I suppose I could move all the internals over to another STD bore block I have using new +20 thou pistons. ANy comments?

Byron,
I wouldnt pay any money for a 60 thou over block..
By the time you do all the things you want to do with it, you may as well do it right with a std bore or better block.. at least it will have another life left in her.
I just gave away a 6

I'm not really buying the block - I just intended using it for now if the bore isn't too worn (ie can be honed), but if +0.060" 308's get hot I don't want the block at all. I'm only looking at about $650 for a complete and running 308 stroked to 350. I wa |

sounds like you've got it all thought out Byron :-)
and it is cheap.. i would get it, even if you needed the crank ground etc you'd still be in front.
stroker kits seem to be dropping in price all the time ive noticed too.
Cheers

I've noticed the COME kits that include crank, pistons, rods, rings and bearings and balancing have come down to under $2k. The 3.75" stroker version is about $2.2k - from my perspective that is pretty good value if you were rebuilding a 308 and already h |

yeah definitely a good proposition.
I was in a similar position already having a good VN top end, mild ported heads, DP manifold, TH400 and 9 inch... the bottom end I had however was 60 thou over. anyway to cut a long story short, I got a good VS botto
