Are HJs pre pollution? i want to drop in a 350 into a HJ Van as HQ vans are getting too hard to find in good nick and/or too far away so im after a HJ as i prefer to do something to it and sell the HZ Sandman as i dont have the heart to cut it up and tub it

The 350 wasn't available in the HJ model but you may be OK as the HJ's didn't have ADR27A applicable to them which was the tougher emission regulation.
Make sure you check with your local rego authorities before buying or planning anything though. Get

The late HQ & early HJ was ADR26 or ADR27 only. This was the breather from the front offside valve cover to the carby, and the carby heater over the nearside engine manifold with the tube and carby flappy thing. That should be it on a 253/308. On a 350 hm
