Thanks for your input regarding my HQ fuel pump question. I think you are right that the diphragm has probably died.

Could you help me with another question. The original pump that the car came with lasted for 15 years and 250,000 Kms without any problems. The current pump was fitted 8 years ago and has covered only 20,000 kms, as the car is no longer a daily driver.

I have read on other sites that unleaded fuel when used in older cars is hard on carbs and pumps.
Just wondering if this may account for the apparent premature failure of the current pump.
I know you can just be unlucky, but the reason I ask is I am considering replacing the pump with an electric one if this will last longer

Can you please give me some tips as to what you think would be the best thing to do

Unleaded 91 gave the older cars a heap of hassles over here when it was first introduced, it mainly seemed to affect the pommy stuff and cortinas,
The new diesel is having the same effect on pre 93 diesel pumps...

I dont think unleaded has any effect on the pump or carby but runs really bad on the engine as it is far too low octane and will cause excessive pinging. use a premium or semi premium. Then there is valve seat/valve face damage but you should get 30 or 40
