I wonder if anyone could help me out with a problem I have with my 1989 KE laser with a 1.6 litre motor and 3 speed auto , yes I know it's crappy, but it's my work jeep and I really need it going and reliable , which it has been and still is. The problem is when I accelerate and it's usually in 2nd gear the engine makes a metallic tapping noise, but not the tappets, louder noise than that, but not always, usually half way to work and then not always, and then only selectively, there's no problems with power or economy, any ideas, is it time to re- donk, or is it something else, thanks Stuy.

probably big ends new/recon engine will cost more than the car is worth but if you continue running it you will throw a con rod and wreck the motor. not a big job to fix but engine may have to come out don't know if you can drop sump with engine in, also

John could be erring on the side of the worst case scenario here. It could be big ends or it could also be merely pinging due to being overly lean or your timing being advanced or just plain carboned up.
Is it EFI or carby?

It's a carby, and the carby is dodgy, sticking and idling fast, I sometimes need to give the pedal a jab to settle it down, and a bit more info, it only does it accelerating at about 2500 revs, and then not always, and it wasn't doing it when I first boug
