First before I bore you to death with a history lesson here in NZ. The HQ is the one because of the Street stocks and the HQ Racing. The prices here have gone mad 6500 for a belmont not that tidy.
Here in NZ we have been ahead in some things. We got jap imports in 1987 at which time the price of the cars here dropped. As the imports were cheaper than the ones built here.
As a result the local car manufacturing plants all closed down. General motors Ford toyota mitusbushi all closed.
It was cheaper to import than to assemble here. Then when the NZ Goverment wipped the 1500$ import duty on cars the prices dropped even lower and the amount of cars coming in rose.
As a result car sales popped up all over the place as so many people upgraded there current older car to a extremely new car in comparrison.
As a result of the newer cars being so cheap compaired to previous, the older cars lost there value, thousands of dollars was wipped off of old cars like Mk5 cortinas and every other car at that time.
As a result of this market colapse in prices when peoples cars broke down they simply sent them to the scrap heap and replaced with late model jap import.
I saw the distruction of and the loss of so many cars. At which time the price of second hand parts from the wrecker was extrememly low as demand was also low as there were more old cars in the wreakers than people needed parts for.
The newer jap imports on the other hand had very little parts and in some cases the parts had to come from japan as the import models at that time were sligtly different from our local cars. Especially with extras like electic mirrors windows and all the extras. Causing the jap import parts to be very expensive which they have remained.
The age of the NZ fleet decressed and the loss of old cars was huge.
I went to Aust 4yrs ago and there were more older cars on the road. But now the older cars there seem to be old jap cars more than old holdens etc. Old holdens being before 80s.
In the early 90s Hq holden racing started up and still continues today. Also at local dirt racing the hq has been used as a Street Stock.
With the expense of fixing late model cars this has now created the destruction of any thing prior to 1991 with the price of cam belts head gaskets or clutches reaching $1000 per fix when all the extra parts eg water pumps, cam tentioners ,plaining heads etc are taken into account. When for $6000 you could update to a newer car say 1998. And with the old car theres no telling if something else is about to go wrong.
This has caused a gap in the cars that between 1980 and 1990 there is very little cars of that era.
One other problem we have incounted here is CONTINUISE LICENCING. This is where even if the rego runs out and you dont use the car you have to keep paying.Up to 1year.When this first began you had
This created other problems as people who just had cars parked up when this first started had 1 year to put the registration on HOLD, If this wasnt done you had to re VIN the car which involved a extremely rigorus test. To the extent that if you went to a hard place that would make you remove any dents from chassis rales. Check thickness of discs and so many things that a friend of mine it cost over $3000 to put his car back on the road.
This has made a lot of the older cars get wrecked out as it was to expensive depending on the age of the car and just a real pain to get this done.
People here are now rebadging cars that have been deregisted with other peoples plates and papers of a car that is still in the system. If the car they buy is of a low value and theres in higher as of condition.
The part of this continuous liciening REGO is that if you dont use the car you fill out a form and put it on Hold for up to 12months.
With people forgetting to put them back on hold even if they get a reminder its caused more to be de registered over the years. The price to reregister is 600-700 plus all the fixing you have to do. With rego here only 210 this is expensive. And if that car has been modified this means Certification up to $450 on top.
