My saginaw has a 2.54:1 first gear ratio (apparently), what is the other ratio, why the difference?

Saginaw 4-speed 1st 2nd 3rd 4th No lines (grooves) 2.84 2.01 1.35 1.00 1 Line (groove ) 2.54 1.80 1.44 1.00 2 Lines (grooves) 3.11 2.20 1.47 1.00 3 Lines (grooves) 3.50 2.47 1.65 1.00 Others found but not with complete specs: ------------------

Yours is an M21. There was an M22 Saginaw with 2.85 1st which was standard fitment to 6cyl HK utes/vans if you ordered a 4spd. The M22 was also used on HT 186S if ordered with heavy duty 4spd.

as for why... you probably understand the difference between a low ratio diff (say a 4.11) and a high ratio (say 2.78). To understand the gearbox ratio difference all you need to do is multiply the ratio by your rear gear ratio to get your final drive rat
