Hi all
Brother has recently purchased a really good original 1984 WB ute with 4.2 motor. All stock standard, motor sound and runs well. Trimatic, no power steering, aircon fitted but not working at this stage.
What is typcial economy around town? From what he tells me, its getting between 17 and 20mpg around town, or 14.3 and 16.6l/100km. Is this typical? Been a few years since I had cars that old, but 20mpg around town seems pretty normal.
He says he can also smell petrol when the car is stopped even after half an hour of returning to the vehicle, although there is no obvious fuel leaks. Choke does not appear to be sticking....?
Feedback appreciated.
Matt

Fuel smell can be a couple of things (I have personally found).
The fuel tank iteslf can leak / vent in unexpected places. The tank breathers have rubber hoses connecting them to the vent pipes. These can perish and leak over time. If you sit the car |

About 15l/100km should be about right, I have a VH 253 Trimatic. Expect it to be a bit higher than an EFI 3.8 V6 which would give about 12l/100km in town.

The fuel pump on these V8s can weep a little causing the smell, my 308 HZ stato did this until I found the leak. As said already check the vent hoses at the tank, also there is a rubber hose joining the metal lines in the chassis rail on the drivers side |

Best I have had from my 253, Strommie, Tri, 2.78 combo is in the 6.10 to 6.80 km/litre (17-19MPG or 16.4 to 14.9 l/100kms) around town, and at best 22MPG on a highway (12.8l/100 or 7.8 km/l).
However a 253 with manual box can get over 10litre/100kms (2
