Hi my GEN light is on on the dash. I got a multimeter and had the car running and the volt said 14 but then I tested a non running car and it said about the same. Straingely enough.<spell check>

I then got another alt out of a 77 HJ 1 tonner. Was working about 8 months ago.

I put that in and the gen light was out.
Ive just driven to work and the light has just come back on.
WTF.Ill be leaving here in the dark so this may be fun.

To test do I just put a multimeter on the battery?? Thats what I did with the other alt.

Or could it be the regulator??. If regulator breaks down what usually happens?

Thanks in advance

if your alt is stuffed it will not charge your battery and you will stop(flat battery) change your regulator and check again, if its charging ok it might be a bad earth somewhere.
