hi, need to replace the trimatic in my HQ
i'd sorta settled on a getting a stage 2 to go with future mods
but then i talked to a shop rebuilder who said i might be interested in a stage 2 he had, but with the internal bushings replaced with ball and roller bearings (he also said to use a WB or later box coz you could fit in more clutches)
i'll be going the stroker route: 355, performer manifold, reco quadrajet, headers with a single big bore exhaust, and maybe up to a crane 286 cam
so i'd like to know if the bearing upgrade is worthwhile and what prices i should expect to pay ( quoted about $1000 for a stage 2 and $1300 for a stage 2 with the bearing modifications )
and as always, any other tips greatfully received
yes sonny, it's an HQ ute |

Just playing devils advocate, what about a better box eg TH400? Easy conversion when you are rebuilding ie new block, crossmember and tailshaft (you have to change shifter anyway when going to a WB/VC onwards trimatic). A trimatic can be made quite strong |

jeez how much power is he going to be making to break a built trimatic? the highest power ive seen from a 286 cammed 355 was 272rwkW. that was also a TP manifold, VN headed, injected version. Unless he can get the T400 cheaper?

Understand.
Boom, kW aint the problem, its torque. The engine described will be torquey as hell.

unless hes going to abuse it the built trimatic will deal with it. but yes, the turbo boxes are much stronger.

Only the TH400. You might as well keep a trimatic as bother change to a TH350.

Agreed the TH400 is a stronger box. Although heavier and drags more HP. Trimatics can be built pretty strong these days. I guess the key is finding a good transmission builder and being truthful about how hard your planning on running it. Most reputa

2 gears wouldn't be as great on the street, but would shave your times.

Back when we were racing we ran a beefed up trimatic. Which was basically just a HQ HP spec box with increased pump pressure and from memory a modified transfer plate. This was behind a 308 with a max 200hp shot of N2O (off the line) in a 2700lb LC Tora
