Hi all, I have tried to canvass this before but I wish to try again. I have a HJ Van 308 4 speed with a '11qt' rebuilt motor with mild cam.
The problem; The alt guage, when cold, goes up to the red area then fluctuates for a few minutes. It makes the radio cut out intermittantly and at night the headlights go through a bright glow when in the red and then drops a bit when the alt guage comes into normal range. It only does this for a couples of minutes till warm, then stays at the normal range from then on. The Alt is a bosch with what appears to be an inbuilt Reg. I say this because there is no separate regulator.
I have a Lucas alt as a spare and looks like it doesn't have the brown bakalite attachment like the bosch. Can I put this one on to check if the bosch is faulty? Or get a new alt?
Any thoughts

Find a reasonable auto electrical place. They should have a test rig where they can spin up the alternator and check the output voltage at various rpm. That should tell you if the alternator / regulator are dodgy or not. If regulator is dodgy, you may |

Thanx Jabba, I would like to see if there is a simple solution prior to going for diagnosis with an expert. Is there a test I can do myself, I have various test gauges, if that helps, but don't know exactly I'm testing for.

Measure the battery voltage when the engine is off. Should be somewhere between 12 and 13.8V. Measure it again with everything normalised and engine running. Battery volatge should be about 14.2V or thereabouts. This is a good starting point for checking |

If your Bosch alternator has the built in regulator it will be a black plastic box held on to the back of the alternator with 2 screws.
Those regulators can give trouble and cost about $40 for a new one which is cheaper than replacing an otherwise |

There has to be a strap to the engine or the starter wouldn't crank.

My mistake, there is a strap from the bat to the front of the bat. Im exploring any other possibilities for the fluctuation. could it exist on the guages or anything else.
Cheers

This does not sound like an altenator problem, the battery starts the engine so must be OK, if the alternator was not charging the radio and lights would work normally until the battery went flat. It sounds like a connecton, maybe the positive wire from t

Thanx 81837, the GTS dash was in it when I bought it about 7 years ago. There were issues which turned out to be earth straps from body to chassis etc, but that was fixed, I've got plenty of them on now. Can the solenoid on starter be going?
