I have had a 383 stroker built by an interstate engine mob that has a voilent vibration through the engine at most engine speeds. It is enough to bash the extractors on the chassis rails and create an very unpleasent enviroment in the car. The engine is a 383 stroker, Scat crank and rods New GM block, Flat top pistons, World product heads, Performer manifold, 750 hp Holley, cam specs i don,t know. This engine was supposed to be mild, but i am sure it is going to smash itself to bits. It has a harmonic balancer with a big weight inside it and the flex plate has also got somesort of weight welded to it on the engine side.
Balancer was supplied and fitted by engine builder. Flexplate was supplied by builder and fitted by me, i think it has a dowl and can only be fitted in one spot. Box and converter (TH350/3200 STALL) supplied by engine builder and fitted by me. Have tried converter at all three different bolts holes. Still the same.
Can anyone shed any light on this as i don,t know whats going to break first, my old (new) HK ute or the engine i have been supplied. I have spent a huge amount of coin on this 3 year build and i am pretty cranky with this as you can imagine.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers Stumpy
Thanks in advance Stout

well stumpy, i am sorry to hear about your woes? but i am sure the real cluey blokes will say the same thing> proces of elimination?? eg, does it do it when reving in neutral? or only when driving, will it vibrate if the rear wheels are off the gr Edited by user Tuesday, 15 July 2008 9:33:23 AM(UTC)

Yep elimination...
Id remove the trans and converter and give it a run... a trolley jack (& block o wood) on the sump to support engine just in case it decided to launch itself off the engine mounts... ...see how that goes...

My first thought was an incorrect balancer or flex plate as 3.75" stroke SBC's should be externally balanced. You might want to make sure it is actually externally balanced first. If it is I'd be banking on the weights being added in the wrong spots. Pull |

Byron, Thanks for your interest. I have forwarded some pics to you of the damper showing the counterweight and keyway location.
Thanks Jason

All the combo sounds OK/normal. Did the engine get balanced when it was built? The balancer and flexplate that you have sound right for a 383 externally balanced engine. But was wondering if perhaps it has an internally/neutral balance crank, which woul

After todays events and discussion with the engine builder it looks like Sandman and Byron are right.
Last night i removed the weight from the balancer and refitted it and fired the engine, with an 50-60% improvment in running quality, a lot a vibratio

Hi stumpy
Are you saying that the engine builder has just thrown the engine together & not had anything balanced or even checked properly ??
Not much of an engine builder, IMHO.

I was told the assembly was balanced as a kit and purchased from the states.

Today i got the time to remove the weight on the flexplate with a bit of dickin around. After this i fired the engine to a sweet sounding and smooth small block chev.
Some expected (cammmy) vibration at idle, but clean and crisp from off idle to high

Make sure you have a good oil pressure gauge. Do a test run, say 20 mins at 100kph then note what oil pressure it is sitting on, what rpms, oil type and grade etc. Then you have a good base reading if you do start having trouble with the bearings. I hav
