Hi All,
I hope someone can help me out.
I have a HJ Monaro with a 308 (mild cam, extractors and 650 Holley).
I have just had the leads replaced, the timing on the distributer fixed and a full service.
Recently i was driving home and it stalled on me. Since trying to restart it it sounds like it is missing badly and wont idle (just cuts out) even when warm. If i give it some revs (about 2k or more) the missing seems to disappear.
Another thing i noticed before this was if the fuel was running low 1/8th tank type territory it would run a bit rough.
Anyone have any ideas as to what might be wrong?
Thanks in advance.

Maybe your last word ie "advance" is the problem - possibly the dizzy is loose and has moved?

Thanks HK1837
I should also point out that it has been wanting to stall on braking as well. Though this usually occurs when less than quarter of a tank.
This could be unrelated though.
Thanks.

Also, based on your comment, would i be better off installing a HEI instead of fixing the current dizzy.
The guy who worked on the car did say at the time that he fixed it it had been highly retarded and he had made a big adjustment to tune the motor.

I'd put a HEI in regardless. Try this too - disconnect the vacuum hose to the brake booster and the transmission if it's an auto and see if that helps (don't drive it that way of course). It may have a ruptured diapragm in the booster or the shift solenoi |

Also, it may be that the "massive amount of retard" is actually a lie. (By the engine that is). The balancer rings are known to shift, so a "proper" tune may actually make it run particularly badly. Try setting by ear (turn distributor until idle is |

I know this sounds silly, but how will i know if it is pinging.
Is it a movement when accelerating or a sound that i should be wary of.
Thanks.

I'd also look at a massive vacuum loss problem, the hint is it starts to bugger up when you brake, that's when the booster is losing vacuum badly and this will affect the engine also. Maybe replace the booster if you have another one?? I'd be looking at |

advance the timing then take it for a drive and put your foot down in a high gear to load up the engine if its pining it will sounds like someone shaking a can full of marbles you cant miss it. it will happen as soon as you put your foot down. advance it |

Hi all
Thanks for your help.
I have checked the leads and everything seems ok. I have tried to disconnect the vacuum hose the brake booster (not a auto but a supra 5 speed) but it seems ok cause it doesnt come loose.

if its running rich and fueling up it will slowly stall and fuel up. does not matter if the vacume line comes loose disconect it and plug it as it could be leaking in the booster. |

It sounds as if your float level is way to high or more likely the float has filled with fuel and sunk which just lets tons of fuel into the engine and it shoots up the air bleed tube and sits on the top of the carby as you described.
