Sorry to keep dredging up the same questions.
The non original 308 in my HT has the following stats: Engine No. - VA531009 Cast Date - 17E5 Size on block - 308
So monaroparts dot com indicates this is a VK 304. The cast date (17 May 1985) would support this.
The 308 on both sides of the block contradicts 304.
Anyway, would my motor be a 304 or 308?
Should it be leaded or unleaded? Im guessing leaded because I think I remember VLs being the first unleaded commodore.
Would it be red, blue or black? It is currently painted red and it is an obvious repsray.
Also, what transmission pattern is it likely to have? I'm positive I have a powerglide and it looks to bolt straight up to the block without adaptor plates or the like.
What pollution gear should I be running if I was to follow the letter of the law in WA? I have no pollution gear to speak of, with the exception of a auto choke on the Rochester. The Rochester has plenty of lines coming off it but they are mostly blocked off. The fuel line enters the front of the carby.
Anyway, I will be remotoring the car and I'm thinking this block may not be the best starting point.

Its a black 304. Itll have a trimatic pattern. 308 stayed on the side until it got replaced with 5.0L (same with the crank).
In NSW to the letter of the law you need to run VK pollution equipment, not sure about WA. Id look around for an earlier block |

Its quite a unique prefix - Holden only ran the VA prefix on auto 304s from early 85 to the end of 85. The manual 304s had VB, VC & VG prefixes.
If that one has never been opened, it will have L34 rods in it, as all VA prefix motors from a certain bre |

Thanks Mick,
I couldnt say if the motor has been opened up or not. If this motor ends up being the basis for the freshen up I will keep the L34 rod fact in mind. Actually, I will keep it in mind regardless of what becomes of this motor.
